Frances Englander Obituary

Frances Hull Englander "Pat", age 90, passed away June 11, 2006 of a stroke. She was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. on August 16, 1915 to Francis Marion Hull and Mable Quick Hull of Titusville, Penn. Frances was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Hull Rodgers. In 1944, Frances married Herman Englander (who predeceased her in 2004). Herman and Frances were married for 60 years. The wedding service was performed at Marble Collegiate Church, New York City, by Norman Vincent Peale. Frances was an honor graduate of N.Y.U., and a former dietician and home economics teacher. She had a master's of science from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and her thesis paper was later published in Forecast magazine. The subject concerned introducing black culture into the classroom. Frances was an accomplished artist, gardener, avid reader, and a member of the Audubon Society. She had a love of nature which she portrayed in her artwork. She was also a member of the Morristown, N.J., D.A.R. Chapter for 35 years. Over the course of 12 years, she and her husband had six children, three girls followed by three boys. The family resided in Short Hills, N.J. for 45 years. Late in life, they moved to Richmond and lived in Carriage Hill and Imperial Plaza, but she was residing at Sunrise Assisted Living when she passed away. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Mary Hull Dyke of Mt. Joy, Penn.; her children, Claire Englander of Oakland, Calif., Ellen Essigmann of Cambridge, Mass., Ruth Powell of Richmond, Va., David Englander of Devon, Penn., Philip Englander of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Robert Englander of Chatham, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Christine Powell, Lisa Hartsook, Amy Essignmann, Max Englander, Sam Englander, Nolan Essigmann and Karsten Englander; and one great-grandchild, Ethan Carter Hartsook. A memorial gathering is planned at a later date.

Our Mother, known as Pat by those closest to her, raised six children. She always had our best interests at heart and was so very kind to everyone she knew.
We were blessed to have her in our lives for many years....we miss her.

In Memory of My Mother: Frances Hull Englander

August 16, 1915 to June 11, 2006

She filled my childhood with stories and nursery rhymes;

She instilled in me the beauty of the natural world;

She showed me how to find meaning in small gestures and words;

She taught me to accept my imperfections and see the best in others; and, most importantly,

She modeled how to be a Mother.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for your kindness, gentleness and intelligence. I only wish that you had known what a profoundly good and kind person you were. However, you were always so modest.

Love, Claire
