Frank Grier Obituary

GRIER, Frank Luttrell, II, died Friday, July 2, 2021, of complications related to lung cancer. He was 77.

The son of Cornelia Maslin and Barron Kelly Grier, Frank was born on June 19, 1944, in Washington, D.C. He attended Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va., and graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C., with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Dearly loved by his family, Frank had a joy-filled disposition, a passion for golf, a penchant for colorful attire and a preference for good Scotch and Kendall-Jackson chardonnay. He was known to describe himself with a laugh as the Mary Poppins of Men ("practically perfect in every way"), and his family agreed.

An avid Redskins fan, he was often frustrated with his football team, whose new name he just could not adopt. He joked that he wanted their team members as his pallbearers, so they could let him down one more time.

Golf was a lifelong passion. Frank was proud of his three holes-in-one and was thrilled to have played courses ranging from Kapalua to Pebble Beach to St. Andrews.

For many years, he was an active member of Kiwanis. He was a recipient of their prestigious George F. Hixson Fellowship and twice served as club president.

Frank was devoted to his daughters, his bonus son, grandchildren and his wife of more than 30 years. He married Marjorie Norgaard on October 20, 1990, and could not believe his good fortune in a happy second marriage.

Frank worked for McLean Trucking for two decades. His positions in sales and management took him from New Jersey to Rhode Island to North Carolina, and finally to Virginia. Subsequently, he held positions for Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) and Cronatron, a commercial and industrial maintenance business.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Alexis (Langdon) Reid of Staunton, Va., Emily (Raj) Madan of Washington, D.C. and Andrew (Kathryn) Healy of Charlotte, N.C. He is also survived by his sisters, Anne Maslin Grier of Richmond, Va. and Mary (Robert) Williams of Charlottesville, Va.; by his sisters-in-law, Katherine (Bill) Mezger of Lampasas, Tex. and Ann (John) Smereczniak of Red Wing, Minn. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Terry and Phil VanderMyde. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Caroline and Davis Reid, Lucy, Norah and Gray Madan and Lindsay Healy.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 16, at River Road Presbyterian Church. Frank was partial to colorful golf attire, so attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly.

I am so sorry for your loss. Frank was one of my very favorite people to play golf with. However, I left RCC years ago and lost track of him. I will never forget the joy I had playing golf with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love to everyone who will miss him.
