Fred Bennett Bisger
July 10, 1932 - January 18, 2026
Fred Bennett Bisger, 93, passed away January 18, 2026, at Lakewood Health Services. He was buried at Beth El Cemetery on January 22, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Saul Bisger and Mollie Steinberg Bisger. His paternal grandparents, Ephraim Bisger and his wife, perished in the Holocaust. His maternal grandparents, Louis and Ida Sachs Steinberg, were from Norfolk, Va.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rebekah Garrard Bisger; son, Jeffery Stuart Bisger (Kimberly); daughters, Leslie Susan Bisger Arnold (Kevin) and Mollie Berniece Bisger; two grandchildren, Amy Bisger Peery (Harrison) and Samantha Bisger Stephano (Stephen); and two great-grandchildren, Douglas Peery and Lucy Stephano.
Fred was born in Petersburg and spent his early years in Hopewell, where his father had a men's clothing store. Upon the death of his father, Fred moved to Petersburg at the age of 13 to live with his aunt and uncle. Fred graduated from Petersburg High School as salutatorian but lacked funds for college. He was encouraged to take the scholarship examination at the University of Richmond (formerly Richmond College) where he won a four-year scholarship to the college. He enjoyed serving as president of the Richmond College Student Government Association while earning a business degree.
Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of captain. After his military service, he returned to Richmond, where he was a homebuilder and became a realtor. He was very proud of his designation as a Realtor Emeritus for his 50-year career. Fifty years ago, he began building apartments for his portfolio and by the end of his active career owned apartment communities throughout central Virginia and commercial properties in several states.
He enjoyed being a member of The Westwood Club for over 60 years, where he could often be found on the tennis court. He loved spending summers at the beach cottage in Nags Head with his wife and youngest child, and for the past 15 years, spending winters in Florida at homes on Anna Maria Island and in Sarasota.
Fred enjoyed traveling in Europe and made a dozen trips through the years. His favorite was his last trip in 2025, which was a journey on the Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul and in his words "a once in a lifetime journey".
