29 years ago I lived next door to Gayle in Newport News and was great friends with her daughter Stephanie and son Bobby. I have seen her few times since as our lives have taken differing paths, but my memories of Mrs. Donne (as I knew her) are fond. She was the nice lady that made popsicles from cool-aide and put Bactene on my toe when I hurt myself playing in the street. She gamely braved our circus productions and made us all think we were stars. She made us lunch when we played in her back yard and was always, always a friend to my mother who loved her very much. My family sends their prayers and condolences to her family.

Gayle's strength and character, her humor, and her generosity of spirit are reflected in Stephanie, Bobby, and Kyle. I admired her ability to be not only a patient and tolerant mother, but a friend, confidant, role model, and fan of her children. Each of them has been generous to me and to many others, and Gayle's spirit and influence lives in them.

I met Gayle as a high school student when I was dating her son Bobbie. She was the first adult I had ever met who was totally herself and equally comfortable hanging out with us, the Jesus Lizard, or her friends. I always thought she was really cool and I still wear the jewelry she made for me. I am so so sorry to hear of her passing.

Gayle Clarke was my best friend and confidant for 27 years. We worked together for 20 years, we went to church together and we vacationed with each other. She and her son Kyle spent many Holidays with my family, they became family. We shared so many wonderful times and had so many late night phone conversations over the years. Once in a lifetime, if your lucky, you have a lifetime friend. Gayle was mine. She understood what it meant to be a best friend. I will miss her dearly. Till we meet again Gayle! Stephanie, Bobby and Kyle, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Kyle, Bobby and Stephanie, I had the fortune to get to know your mom through her 27 year friendship with my sister Gail. Along with Kyle, she attended many of our family functions, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and gatherings. We have laughed, cried, and cared about her for so many years. She was truly a member of our family and all of us shall miss her. Gayle's laugh was one of pure gusto and enjoyment. It is what I will remember the most about her. My mom, Edna, loved cooking her salt herring breakfasts through the years. You shall always be a part of our family as was your mom. May God comfort each of you as He invited Gayle to be with Him. Much love, Pam, Ian and Edna
