George Scruggs Obituary

George Lee Scruggs Sr. of Lynchburg, Virginia, was born on May 14, 1928, and died on the evening of Friday, April 18, 2003 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gracie Hancock Scruggs and Silas Pat Scruggs, and his wife of 20 years, Elaine Walker Scruggs. He is survived by his son, George Lee Scruggs Jr.; daughter-in-law, Barbara Moore-Scruggs; two grandchildren, Phillip and Jessica Scruggs of Midlothian, Virginia; two sisters, Ann Turner and Shirley Berry; one brother, James Scruggs, all of Maryland; one aunt, Vivian Morris of Maryland; several nieces, one devoted, Gracie Scruggs "Knot" of Maryland; several nephews; one aunt-in-law, Jimmie Coleman of Lynchburg; and numerous relatives and friends, one devoted, Ernestine Linthicum. Mr. Scruggs retired from Babcock and Wilcox in 1990 after 27 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War and received several commendations for meritorious service, including the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal, while in service for his country. He was a lifetime member of Post 8184 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a longtime member and volunteer (van driver) of Court Street Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Hillsmen Club. Remains rest at Community Funeral Home, 909 Fifth Street, Lynchburg, where a wake will be held on Tuesday, April 22, from 6 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, at Court Street Baptist Church, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery.
