George Woltz Obituary

George Woltz

October 22, 1933 - July 16, 2025

George Woltz, former Richmond advertising executive and creator of "Virginia is for Lovers" passed away peacefully July 16, 2025 in Naples, Florida. He was born October 22, 1933 in South Boston, Virginia, the son of Louis H. Woltz and Gertrude (Royster) Woltz.

George studied art at RPI (VCU) and went into the advertising business, eventually starting his own firm, Martin and Woltz. In 1968, George led the creative team that developed the iconic slogan "Virginia is for Lovers." The slogan remains the state's tourism slogan to this day. In 1975, Martin and Woltz separated into two different agencies. George created "Woltz and Associates" with a small team of talent from the previous agency. By the mid 1980's, George sold Woltz and Associates to Clinton E. Frank of Chicago, which was in turn acquired by Interpublic Group's Campbell Ewald of Detroit. In both acquisitions, George was asked to remain in a leadership role. By 1990, George was ready to fully retire from advertising.

Following retirement, George and wife Nancy moved to Naples, Florida, where they played tennis until well into their 80s, traveled the world, and were active in the arts.

George was preceded in death by his older brother, Louis Allen Woltz and younger sister, Betty Woltz. He is survived by a younger sister, Nancy W. Johnsen (Artie); his adoring wife of 67 years, Nancy; a son, Lt Col George Woltz, Jr, USAF (Ret) (Cindy) and a daughter Hunter W. Kornblau (Bryan); four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts or Artis Naples. A Celebration of Life is planned in the fall. The full obituary can be viewed at www.fullernaples.com.
