Gurleen Ferguson Obituary

Gurleen Verlander Ferguson

October 28, 1924 - June 23, 2025

Gurleen was proud to have lived 100 years. She was raised on Turkey Island, Virginia and was the daughter of Annie May Alexander Verlander and Bemmiss Verlander. She graduated from Mary Washington College in three years majoring in chemistry and math. After graduating , she helped her cousin, John Alexander, drive his car to his duty station in California. She traveled back from California by train to work at Dupont in the lab.

Gurleen married Carl Jones in 1948. They moved to White Stone, Virginia to set up the White Stone Pharmacy. The family moved to Richmond in 1950 where she helped Carl establish his pharmaceutical company and raise their children. Gurleen is survived by her two children Nancy Jones Morris (John) and H.Carl Jones, Jr. (Cathy); her three grandchildren, Edward Morris, Catherine Anderson and Cameron Jones; and one great grandson Ethan Johnson.

When her children entered college, Gurleen went back to school to renew her teacher certificate and spent many happy years teaching math at Mosby Middle School and Open High in Richmond.

Carey Jones and Gurleen were married at Historic Christ Church during her time teaching. They enjoyed the cottage on the Rappahannock River every weekend where Gurleen had an active roll in the renovation. They loved going to the' Rivah' and even had the Rappahannock Record delivered to their Richmond home. They were wonderful hosts and enjoyed making both Carey's ketchup and famous crab cake recipe.

After Carey's death, Gurleen married Richard H. Ferguson ,a widower, whom she had known since first grade at Varina School. They both were 81 and enjoyed travel, shared memories and dancing to music from the 1940s. She played weekly bridge and Mah Jongg.

Gurleen enjoyed her independence and drove well into her 90's. She lived independently until her two month hospitalized battle with Covid in early 2022. A special thanks to Judy Goodman, Stephen Anderson, as well as the staff of Covenant Woods for making her 90's work.

Burial will be private in Oak Wood Cemetery in the Alexander plot.

A Memorial Service will be held at River Road United Methodist Church, 8800 River Road, Richmond,VA. 23229 on July 15, 2025 at 2 PM.

In lieu flowers, donation can be made to the Henrico Humane Society or NAMI.

Gurleen was one of my Aunt Jeanne Frayser´s best friends. She visited my aunt before she passed in 2022 at age 98 and they had the best time giggling and laughing, looking at old photographs and just remembering the past! She was a lovely person. I wish I had known she was still with us as I would have visited her often. Prayers are going out to the family.

Gurleen was one of my aunt´s best friends. She came for a visit before my Aunt Jeanne Frayser passed in 2022 at age 98. They were just like young schoolgirls looking at old photographs and laughing! I wish I had known Gurleen was still with us as I would have visited often. She was a lovely lady. Prayers are being sent to the family.

Hurlers looked forward to us coming into her room on a daily basis. She loved to talk to us about her life history. It was very interesting. She always asked about my kitty cat. We loved Gurleen had a lot of fun laughter. She is deeply missed

To Nancy and her family- my heartfelt condolences to you all. With the passing of a mother go a significant part of self, not to be ever truly understood nor respected by anyone. You will always hear her laughter and see her smile in your hear. Many days will conjure memories, sweet and poignant. Let your heart wonder with them.
