Harold Bazemore Obituary

Harold N. "Kelly" Bazemore, at the age of 69, after a courageous battle with cancer, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, "Grandy", left us on February 22, 2006 to be with his heavenly Father, and to reunite with his loved ones that went before him. Kelly was surrounded by his devoted and loving family at home. He is survived by his wife, Jean Karns Bazemore; his sons, Harold Scott Bazemore and wife, Shelly, and children, Michael and Tanner, Christopher Norwood Bazemore and wife, Kim, and children, Blanton, Collin and Blakelee; his daughter, Jantz Kelly Rollison and husband, Brian, and their children, Brian Kelly, Christian and Hayden; three stepchildren, Debbie Mayo and her son, Dalton, Robert Loftis and wife, Mandolyn, and their children, Connor and Jack Kelly and Jason Loftis and wife, Angie, and their children, Colten and Emerie. Grandy was extremely proud of his 13 grandchildren who have lost the greatest grandfather in the world. Kelly leaves with all of us invaluable memories and values that will last a lifetime. Kelly was a graduate of Benedictine High School and Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary. He had a memorable sports career throughout high school and college. After leaving college he entered his coaching career as a high school coach at Lee Davis and Meadowbrook High Schools, where he touched many lives in very positive ways and was extremely proud of his championship baseball team at Meadowbrook High School. He was still called "Coach" and was visited often by many students he coached during those days. Numerous awards relating to his achievements in sports and coaching hang on his office wall. After his coaching career, he went into the printing and publishing business. Kelly was with Progress Press of Roanoke and also his own publishing company called Kelly Productions. His prize publication was "Choose Your Virginia" on which the models were his family. This publication was distributed throughout the United States as well as in numerous other countries. Kelly had spent the last 40 years of his professional career promoting tourism in the Commonwealth of Virginia, for which many awards of achievement hang on his office wall for his outstanding contributions for the promotion of tourism. Kelly enjoyed life to the fullest and will be missed by all that knew and loved him. He was a proud Mason and a member of the ACCA Temple Shrine. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, at First Baptist Church, 2709 Monument Ave. with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations in Kelly's memory to First Baptist Church.

Jean and family...we were out of the country at the time of your great loss (and such a loss to everyone who knew Kelly). We shall always remember his great smile and friendship, our work with him through VCA, his visits here with us at the campground, and the wonderful dinners with the two of you. He was an inspiration to everyone whose lives he touched. He always spoke lovingly of you and his children...life will be difficult without him but the values he instilled will certainly make that road easier. If we can be of any help, please call. In love, respect and friendship, Bill & Ruth Small

Jean and Family, we have been out of town and just returned. I knew it was coming but still not prepared. This month, we would have known Kelly for 24 years and we loved him. He was what I always called "the perfect Southern gentleman". I will never hear the bagpipes that I will not think of him, he knew how we loved the music and he would bring his and play for us for many years. He was a perfectionist in his work and we always appreciated that in him. I could never imagine anyone else ever doing our brochure. He was a very good father raising three great children on his own and the love for them and Jean, whom I am so glad he found, was always evident. We will miss him greatly. Everytime I look over at our brochure, I will think of him.Kelly was someone you meet once in a lifetime, a great father, husband and a really true friend. God be with the family and remember all the good times. Farewell our dear friend, Kelly, we will always miss you and love you.

Dear Jean, Catherine (Brooke) Buckingham sent me the newspaper notice of Kelly's death. When we knew Kelly he was just beginning to call himself "Kelly" and was an incredible athlete from day one.Since I have never lived in VA since marrying, I lost contact with Kelly, BUT I hope that you have felt, being Kelly's wife, that Ginter Park Elem. School was an ideal place to begin life and the classmates were very special! We aren't likely to foget each other! I wished that I had lived closer to be able to get to the "GP Reunion" a few years ago, to hear about the lives of favorite childhood people and to be assured that everyone has had a good life. "Kelly was wonderfully happy!", came the report!!! How proud I am of him and what he made of his life!!!! My sympathy and prayers go out to all of you, Jean. Sincerely, Kitten

Jean,

The girls have all reported back to me on the wonderful service and all the love that surrounded everyone at the church. I am so sorry I could not be there, but my son and I were in Chatham visiting with my parents (85 years old). Kelly has been a tremendous support to me as we both faced our challenges. I will miss him greatly but will always remember his zest for life and his strong spirit and love for family.

It has been 45 years since playing baseball for "Coach" Bazemore, but it seems like just a few years ago. He was our first coach at Lee Davis, when we had to make our own baseball diamond from a pasture. Great memories of a fine coach.

To Jean and family:

My heart broke when I read that Mr. Bazemore had passed. I had grown very fond of him while caring for him over that last year. He reminded me so much of my own father. Your love for him was reflected in your care for him, always supportive and encouraging. I have fond memories of the “handprint” comforter and shirt he always had at his side, the numerous teddy bear collection and his warm smile. It was on honor to have met you and my privilege to be his nurse. I will miss all of you.

My deepest sympathy, Denise (nurse at HDH)

His love for his family was in his conversations and his eyes -I know you and all the family will miss him, but just think how fortunate you were to have him for your dad.

I have known Kelly for the 17 years that I have been associated with SVTA. He made me feel welcome in a group of people I did not know. My car broke down on the way to a tourism meeting at the Jefferson Hotel years ago and I called the front desk from a rest area to see if Helen Morton had arrived yet so she could come get me. She had not, but Kelly happened to be standing at the front desk when my call came in and volunteered to come get me. That is how I remember Kelly - always willing to help someone. I remarried in the last 4 years and my husband said that he felt like he had known Kelly forever, right after the 1st time he met him. It is sad for me to think of going to meetings and not seeing his smiling face. He will be greatly missed.
