Harry Anderson Obituary
Harry P. Anderson Jr. died on Monday, March 24, 2003 at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital. He was born in Shreveport, La. December 22, 1919, son of the late Harry P. and Julia Z. Anderson and graduated from St. Christopher’s School in 1939. Before receiving his BA and LLB degrees from the University of Virginia (ATO), he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific in World War II as an infantry combat commander with the Second Marine Division. He was wounded in the landing on Tarawa and received the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star with Combat V. He retired as LT. Colonial. In 1999, he received a citation for being a member of the Richmond Bar Association and practicing attorney for 50 years. He was past President, Richmond Trial Attorney’s Association; Secretary-Treasurer, Virginia Trial Lawyer’s Association; Third District Committee Chairman, and Chairman, Virginia State Bar Medical Committee. He was Past Master, Masonic Lodge No. 51, A.F. and A.M. Harry was a member of First Baptist Church for seventy years, where he served on its endowment board and taught the Austin-Wright Bible class. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution in the state of Viginia and was currently the Judge Advocate of Lee-Jackson Camp I, Sons of Confederate Veterans. As a member of the Country Club of Virginia, he enjoyed his favorite sport, golf. He is survived by his wife, Barbara K. Anderson; son, H. Pierce Anderson III; stepchildren, Carol T. Gilbert and John R. Turlington; and three grandchildren, Christina A. Morton, Cara M. Anderson, and A. Carter Gilbert. He is also survived by his brother, N. Calhoun Anderson of High Point N.C.; and two nephews, Norman C. Anderson, Jr. of Savannah, G.A., and J.T. Smith Anderson of Charleston, S.C. A special thanks is expressed to Elizabeth Cogbill, Harry’s nurse for her devoted service. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue. A memorial service to celebrate Harry’s life will be held Thursday, March 27 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church. Interment, Hollywood Cemetery.
