Henry Winston Holt III
July 24, 1932 - May 8, 2025
Henry Winston Holt III, age 92, died on May 8, 2025, in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he had resided since April 2020, following the death of his beloved wife of 59 years, Lulee. He was born July 24, 1932, in Richmond, Virginia, son of the late Mary Mason Williams Holt and Col. Henry Winston Holt U.S. Army, and brother of the late Mary Mason "Molly" Holt.
Winston is survived by his son, Henry Winston Holt IV (Jennifer) of Seal Harbor, Maine; daughter, Neely Holt McNulty (Richard) of Hanover, New Hampshire; and grandchildren, Lillian Mason McNulty, Sophie Lee Holt, Isabelle Caperton Holt, Braxton Holt McNulty, and Virginia Neely Holt.
As a result of his father's army career, Winston travelled extensively as a child, living in West Point, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Scofield Barracks, Hawaii; Fort Know, Kentucky; Carthage, New York; and both Pinehurst and Southern Pines, North Carolina. In 1943, the family moved back to Richmond anticipating his father's deployment the following year to Europe as Division Artillery Commander of the 8th Armored Division.
In Richmond, he attended St. Christopher's School and he graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, in 1949. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1953 where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. For the next three years he served on active duty in the U.S. Army, first as a Private (E2), then, after completing field artillery officer's candidate school, rising to Second Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1956, as First Lieutenant. He also served for two years as Battery Executive Officer in the 111th Field Artillery of the Virginia National Guard.
His professional life began when he entered the management training program of what was to become United Virginia Bank. While he was at the bank, he took courses and graduated in 1967 from the Stonier Graduate School at Rutgers University. In 1972, he left the bank, as a Vice President, to join Davenport and Company where he became a Senior Vice President and Director, retiring as a Senior Investment Officer in 2012.
An avid exercise buff, Winston enjoyed tennis, golf and hiking well into his 70s, and participated in duathlons up and down the East Coast. As a bachelor, before meeting the love of his life, Betty Lou "Lulee" White, he played the bass fiddle in jazz combos and orchestras throughout the Middle Atlantic states.
Early in his career, his work with the Virginia Division of the American Cancer Society as Chairman and Treasurer led to his membership on the National Board. For his Virginia Division service he was awarded the J. Shelton Horsley Award for 'outstanding contribution to the cause of cancer control in Virginia'. He also worked in several capacities for the Third District Republican Party and served as vestryman and Treasurer at St. Paul's Episcopal Church where his family worshipped for five generations.
As a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, he served on the Virginia chapter's investment committee. He was a member of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence; a member of the Society of Colonial Wars in Virginia and the Country Club of Virginia.
Later in his life he and his wife became inveterate travelers. In addition to frequent visits with their children at their homes in the Northeast, they enjoyed extensive travel and cruises through Europe, the Mediterranean and Egypt.
Although a seemingly austere person on first meeting, Winston was blessed with an indestructible sense of humor which, with his patient and quiet tenacity, carried him though a long and adventurous life.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28th, in Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Episcopal High School, 1200 North Quaker Lane, Alexandria, Va., 22302.
