Herbert Parr Obituary

PARR, Herbert and Nancie, were welcomed through the Heavenly Gates. Nancie left us on July 13 and Herbert followed on July 21, 2022, after making sure his Nancie was well taken care of first. The couple enjoyed the happy bliss of marriage for 67 years. They are survived by Herbert's sister, Rosemary O'Kelly; their daughters, Debra McKercher (Brian), Mildred Manley (Derek); their grandchildren, Ashley Rudder (Scott), Nathan Manley (Sarah), LT. Patrick McKercher, U.S.N. (Kylie), Bridget Smith (SPC. Andrew Smith, U.S. Army); and great-grandchildren, Alden and Tatum Rudder.

Herbert was a graduate of the University of Richmond and studied at the Wharton School of Business. Herbert honorably served his country as a member of the U.S. Army 80th division reserve. Herbert was a valued member of the State of Virginia Department of Corrections until retirement as Executive Assistant Director. Following his career with the state, Herbert conducted business both as a landlord and real estate agent. Herbert also had a long-distinguished career in community service. He served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Credit Union, as chairman of the of the Goochland Planning Commission, as a member of the Richmond Regional Planning Commission and as Treasurer of the Goochland Fire-Rescue Department. Herbert was an avid gardener; that could be seen by his love of boxwoods. He also enjoyed golf with Nancie as a long-time member of Hermitage Country Club. Nancie maintained a welcoming home and raised two daughters all while having a career with Patterson Dental until her retirement. Nancie served as a member of the Crozier Auxiliary Volunteer Fire Department. She was active with the Sleepy Hollow Women's Club, the Cedarfield Book Club and the Hermitage Ladies Golf league. Holding God close to her heart, Nancie was an active member of the Salem Baptist and Derbyshire Baptist Church. An active supporter of all her grandchildren, she regularly attended their sport and school activities. She was well-loved for her family dinners and her grandchildren sleepovers which included the grandchildren raiding her "off-limits" candy cabinet with reckless abandon.

A service will be held at the Woody Chapel at 1771 Parham Road on July 29, 2022 at 11 a.m. followed by a family interment in Westhampton Memorial Park at 10000 Paterson Avenue. There will be a visitation prior to the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Hermitage at: Attention Cedarfield Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23233. The family would like to express a special thank you to Della, the staff and community of Cedarfield and PROMEDICA Hospice Care team for their wonderful care and support of Herbert and Nancie.

I worked with Herb at Long and Foster Real Estate. He was so respected and I am honored and blessed to have known him. He was the definition of class... a true gentleman. May he soar with the angels in heaven.
