Iris Holmes Obituary

HOLMES Iris Estelle Holmes, with her family at her side, entered into eternal life on October 5, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. Iris, the daughter of the late Howard A. and Lucille D. Adkins was born on September 12, 1942. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Garland M. Holmes; and her children, Tamsye "Tammy" D. Jefferson and her husband, Danny, Chelene H. Wynn and her husband, Roger, Nolan M. Holmes and his wife, Trece. She was a devoted grandmother to Courtney and Taylor Wynn and Austin and Amanda Holmes. Iris was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis A. Stewart. She is survived by two sisters, Jean A. Stewart and Janet L. Adkins; five brothers, H. Milton, H. D. "Don", L.I. "Buzz", Stephen R. and Stanley W. Adkins. Iris found much joy in spending time with her family and friends. She found a sense of fulfillment in her roles as leader of "Girls in Action" and director of special programs in her church. Iris, a member of the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, was proud of her Native American Heritage. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 7. A celebration of her life will be held at Samaria Baptist Church, 8130 Lott Cary Road, Providence Forge, Va. at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 8. Memorial contributions may be made to the Samaria Baptist Church building fund.

I love you Gran..you were my everything. You were always there for me. There is a huge void in my heart that will never be filled, but I will extract happiness from thinking about all the good times we had together. I love you very very much.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of grief. Aunt Iris was a wonderful lady who was loved by all and I hope that the memories of her happy and healthy will bring all those comfort who mourn her passing. I will always remember her smile and the kind words she had for me whenever I was with her. May her family find comfort in knowing that she is with God in Heaven and will never feel pain or sickness agian.
