Jacqueline Tompkins Obituary

TOMPKINS, Jacqueline Shaw "Jackie/Mimmie", 85, passed away at home on Sunday, July 17, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer's. Jackie was born in Danville, Virginia and was a graduate of George Washington High School. In 1967, she moved to Richmond, and after a job at WLEE Radio, she founded Jacqueline Tompkins Advertising in 1972. Jackie later opened Alphabet Graphics in 1989, a printing and typesetting company which she ran until its purchase by the Response Market Group in 1993. While working at RMG, she became a proud member of Toastmasters International, a non-profit organization which promotes communication, public speaking and leadership. Jackie ran the Opportunity Toastmasters club and was instrumental in

establishing new clubs throughout Virginia. Her favorite job of all came with the opening of the Richmond USO at the Richmond International Airport in 2010, and she became its first official volunteer. Jackie proudly worked to assist troops traveling away from home, many for the first time, giving them assistance, reassurance and plenty of hugs.

Jackie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Juanita and Cecil Hill; her grandmother, Maude Hinton; her sister-in-law, Kathryne Adams; and brothers-in-law, Joseph Tompkins and Raymond Adams. She is survived by daughter, Mary Evangeline (Van) Tompkins; son, Artie Tompkins III; son, Christopher Tompkins (Denise); daughter, Toni Nuckols (Robert); her former husband, Artie Tompkins Jr.; sisters-in-law, Jeri Tompkins and Angie Greenfield (Walt); brother-in-law, James W. Tompkins (Peggy); 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; her lifelong friends, Carol Souther and Bettie Hagar; her best friend of recent years, Patricia Jordan; and many others for whom she was grateful, including her furry feline family members.

Jackie described herself as self-motivated, enthusiastic and strong under pressure to which all her friends and family can attest. Her last years were not her best, but she smiled, laughed and enjoyed life always, and she will be remembered for the joy she brought to those who knew and loved her.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 13, at 2 p.m. at the Highland Burial Park in Danville, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southside SPCA at https://www.southsidespca.org, or the Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

I volunteered with Jackie at the Richmond Airport USO, she was a kind loving person who took her volunteer job very seriously. The USO has lost another good one! Sending my thoughts, prayers and love to Jackie's family, she was a good "Mimmie".
