James Davis Obituary

James Donald Davis

December 2, 1938 - August 6, 2025

James Donald Davis, of Richmond, passed away on August 6, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Danville, Va., on December 2, 1938, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lottie H. Davis and Dewey Davis; his sisters, Marie Davis and Lois Davis Jones; and brothers, Dewey Davis, Jr. and Zachary N. Davis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann Cosby Davis; his son, James Christopher Davis of Richmond; and his daughter, Elizabeth Davis Reynard of St. Helena, Calif.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim had fond memories growing up in Danville and throughout his life maintained close contact with many of his childhood friends. He felt he had an ideal childhood in a wonderful community with loving parents. Later in life, Jim enjoyed playing squash and valued the friendships he formed through the sport, especially with his Monday night dinner group that met for over 40 years.

In raising his children with Ann, Jim enjoyed countless swim meets, horse shows, and squash matches. He held fond memories of family trips at the beach and to the Caribbean and Europe. Family, friends and living in Richmond were all blessings for him.

After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1961, Jim attended the University of Richmond School of Law where he was a Williams Law Scholar for three years. He graduated third in his class. Jim was a member of the McNeill Law Society and the Law Review, and served as Law Clerk to Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and was a member of the Richmond, VA and American Bar Associations. He also served as Commissioner in Chancery for the court for the city of Richmond, Chesterfield County, and Colonial Heights. Jim practiced and enjoyed law for over 51 years in the Richmond area with McCaul, Grigsby and Pearsall, Manning, Davis and Kirby, and towards the end of his career with Davis and Kirby.

Jim always said that he was one lucky fellow, born at the right time and the right place, and was blessed with a loving wife and two wonderful children.

A private service will be held at a later date.
