James Lowe Obituary
James Herbert Lowe
September 21, 1931 - July 10, 2025
LOWE, James Herbert (Jim) passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 10, 2025. He was born in New Albany, Indiana, on September 21, 1931, the son of Herbert Lawrence Lowe and Christine Keller Lowe. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 63 years, Katharine Tilghman Lowe (Kay); his son, James H. Lowe, Jr.; his daughter, Anne Lowe Thompson (husband Manolo Micheo); and three wonderful grandchildren; Trey, Addison, and Kate Thompson, all of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his son, Frederick (Ted) Tilghman Lowe of San Francisco; and a sister, Joanne Lowe Hunt of Nashville, Tennessee.
Jim spent his early childhood in Louisville, Kentucky until 1940 when the family moved to Madison, New Jersey, where he became an Eagle Scout. In 1949, he graduated from Madison High School having lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He went to Purdue University, graduating in 1953 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He then completed the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and served three years on active duty. In 1957 he enrolled in the University of Michigan's School of Business Administration, receiving an MBA.
In 1959 Jim began his investment career in New York. While working there he and Kay met on a ski trip and were married in 1962. He joined the firm of Cyrus J. Lawrence & Sons where he was named Director of Research in 1965 and General Partner three years later. In 1970, he moved to Richmond to form an investment advisory firm with Austin Brockenbrough III.
In 1996, Jim retired from Lowe, Brockenbrough and Company, but cherished his time and close ties there. He was on the board of Richmond Cerebral Palsy Center, the Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital, (now known as Medarva), and the Maymont Foundation. He also served for several years on the Investment Committee of the Virginia Home, and for 30 years as a trustee of the employee retirement plans of the Country Club of Virginia where he was a member. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Club and St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
Jim enjoyed playing tennis and traveling with his family and friends on ski trips and trips to Europe. He stayed busy at home working in his yard or working on his extensive model railroad, but most of all he cherished spending time with his family and being actively involved in their lives. He was highly thought of for his selflessness, positivity, and integrity and was always described as the perfect gentleman.
We want to thank our very caring caregiver, Jason Williams, who has been with him every day for the last seven months.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, July 16th, at 2 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd. Richmond, Va. 23238, to the Maymont Foundation, 1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, Va. 23220, or the Medarva Foundation, 8700 Stoney Point Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23235.
