James Massie Obituary

MASSIE, James Pleasants III, 64, was born May 3, 1958 and died January 25, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents, Jimmie and Joy and is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; son, Jimmie (Ali); son, William; daughter, Becky; son, John (Lily); three adoring grandchildren, Eliza, Rosa and James; brother, Alex; sister, Sara (Stuart); brother-in-law, Jimmy (Martha); sister-in-law, Renata (Woody); brother-in-law, Doug (Palmer); sister-in-law, Linda (Greg); and many nieces and nephews.

He cherished his childhood and built relationships in school and college that he carried through the rest of his life. He was firmly convinced Virginia was the best place to live. After building a family and business he went into public service and delighted in impacting the world for better, especially through the Virginia Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits. While successful in his professional life, he always prioritized family dinner and Sunday rest. Growing in his faith, he served the church with his financial experience.

He served his children in every way possible, giving them every opportunity and bit of wisdom to prepare them for their lives ahead. He loved spending time with his family, hunting and fishing (mainly for mental health) and packing for family trips. He enjoyed his brownies mushy, his Stone IPA ice cold and was never happier than with a plate of hors d'oeuvres, a sunset and a "stimulating conversation".

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 30, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230. A service and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd., Richmond, Va. 23238. If you want to honor Jimmie, please consider taking a loved one for a walk or to watch the sunset. If you are inclined to make a gift, he was passionate about Third Church, Elijah House Academy and Needle's Eye Ministries.

I have just learned of Jimmy´s passing and wanted to express my shock and sadness.
I met Jimmy in 1980/81at Bankers Trust in Houston, where I was on a 3 year assignment from London. Jimmy had just graduated and we formed a quick natural friendship. He was a big man with a big personality but caring to a fault. Not surprisingly, he was a huge success in Texas and enjoyed the company and friendship of many.
By coincidence I located Jimmy in 2020 and we chatted about old times and our families, recalling a trip my wife and I made with our young son to Jimmy´s parents´ house only to be surprised by a cake and gifts for my birthday. This, frankly, was Jimmy all over.
My sincerest condolences are with his wife and children and wider family.
Rest in peace big my friend

Jimmy was an OUTSTANDING Athlete,
Student, Husband, Father, Business Man, Delegate for Henrico, and long-time Friend.
I met Jimmy and his Family in 1972 when I went to Collegidte to Coach.
He was a Freshman and played, both football and basketball for me.
He was aggressive and LOVED to play. He, Bill Day, Steve Ash, and Bobby Call formed a nucleus that carried the Basketball team to lots of success from 1972-1976.
I will NEVER, EVER FORGET Jimmy, Alex, and the Massie Family.
RIP JIMMY MASSIE

To have witnessed a very special service at St Marys Episcopal Church, where Jimmie and the Massie family were such wonderful active members when we were growing up, and to watch how Jimmies kids honored their father even thru this most difficult time, even bringing gentle laughter and heartfelt smiles to an overflowing congregation, is a testament to the lives that Jimmie touched...and the Nolley family sends their heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all the Massie family.
Rest in Peace Jimmie ....Your friend

Such sad news. Jimmie was a good friend and helped us in many ways when our son died suddenly. He sponsored our memorial golf tournaments and we enjoyed many laughs together working side by side in Henrico Republican politics. He was a great leader and we were all better off knowing him. Keeping you all in my prayers.

I met Jimmie Massie through the connection of his son Jimmie Massie IV as an Intern UVA Scholar at Haileybury College in Hertford, UK. Jimmie then graciously facilitated visits to Richmond for Haileybury Tours to the USA - including the State Capitol and Legislature in Richmond. He - along with Elizabeth - were immensely kind and friendly to me, my wife Jenny and our theee boys (Anthony, Richard and William) on our visits to Richmond and we were thrilled to host the Massies in our home back in Hertford too.

A wonderful character, a true servant leader, excellent family man and an inspiration to so many.

RIP friend - until we meet again/
