James McMullin Obituary

MCMULLIN, Mr. James Keith, was born February 15, 1965, in Richmond, Virginia and died all too soon at age 58 of pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Martha Wayt McMullin; and his children, Charlotte Compton McMullin of Charleston, S.C. and James Finley McMullin of Lexington, Ky. His parents are the late Mr. and Mrs. William Burke McMullin. His siblings and their families survive him, Sally Magarity and Geoff McMullin. Named after Keith Finley -- his father's best friend in World War II -- he graduated from Douglas Freeman High School and the University of Virginia, where he rowed crew. As a high school student, Keith was eligible for a scholarship in furniture design and construction; however, no such program existed at UVA. His father quipped, "We'll just have to make do with UVA."

Keith had the uncanny ability to do almost anything, whether carving and building furniture, renovating houses, working in corporate America, or rowing and kayaking. Of his many fond memories of family and friends, none were more special than fishing with his father at the north end of Virginia Beach and climbing Mount Chocorua with his family in Tamworth, N.H. Here, the family fell under the spell of "Tamworth Time," where clocks and agendas are meaningless.

Professionally, Keith worked primarily in health care. After temporary callings in architecture/construction and event/sports marketing, he worked for many years as a health care executive for Anthem and retired from Bon Secours Mercy Health System.

As a young man, he was responsible for developing Brown's Island as a popular event venue for the community. The concert celebrating the grand opening of Brown's Island and Richmond Riverfront remains a legendary event in both off-the-scale attendance and beer sales. With trademark humor, Keith observed about the first show, "We had no idea how many people would come. I remember standing next to the stage manager and looking up to witness a flood of people streaming down 5th Street to Brown's Island."

Described as a "smiling Scottish warrior" with high energy and a quick laugh, Keith had an innate survivor's instinct and lived for three years with pancreatic cancer despite all odds. He was an early participant in immunotherapy research (ZB-131) at UVA Health, with groundbreaking results to help cure pancreatic cancer for future generations.

Keith will be remembered by many as a community volunteer, early-morning kayaker at Jones Landing, woodworker at Harrison Higgins, Inc., longtime member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and a charter member of the Order of the Oyster in Spottswood Park. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on June 5, 2023, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bon Secours Community Hospice House. The Hospice House has transformed end-of-life care from a medical experience only into a human and family experience (communityhospicehouse.com).

Thinking of Marty, Charlotte and James and all the family at this sad time. You are in my prayers. Keith was larger than life and I can still hear his great laugh all the way over here in France. Great memories of our time together with conversations about art and furniture making and so many other things going on into the night. The memories will last. Sending love.

So sorry to hear of Keith´s passing. We were lab partners at Freeman High School two years in a row. First in biology, then the next year in chemistry. Loved his laugh and his smile. What a great guy.

Keith was a comedic Renaissance Man whose heart had no limits for caring or doing. He left the planet better and richer than he found it; particularly, the Richmond health-care industry.
As a friend of our children, when they were attending Freeman, Keith etched a very special place in my heart. The years passed and whenever any contact was made we picked up right where we had left off......laughing as soon as we saw each other.
Heaven has received a very, very special soul!

My sister worked with Keith for years and he was such a light every time I met him. Such a great sense of humor and great person! Many thoughts and prayers to his family but hope it brings them comfort to many how many lives and peoples hearts he touched! Much sympathy!

I had the pleasure of working with Keith in my job. He was kind enough to present me with a copy of his delightful book, Missing Mary. My deepest sympathies to his wife and children. His love for you shone in every word of his book, and in everything he did for Miss Mary.

Keith was a friend of my Virginia family for many years. I got to know him when I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Keith became a precious source of wisdom, humor, advice and lobster rolls. His support was invaluable. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him. My condolences to his beloved family.

Keith was a friend of mine for 40 years. We chatted frequently and convinced ourselves that we could solve almost all of life's problems. I will remember his laughter, his kindness, his love of family. He believed in me and I believed in him.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Keith was a pal in high school and college. He was a positive and funny guy who loved to laugh, as did I. I'm sure we rarely talked without some laughter erupting! I read his memoir on caring for his mother and was quite moved. May your hearts be comforted by each other and by your many wonderful memories.

I remember Keith from Freeman as a friendly, kind guy. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. In planning our 40th reunion, he was high on my list of people to find and hope to see again.

Keith was one of the most kind, engaging, generous and supportive human beings I've ever known. Consistently and often frustratingly dismissive of his innumerable contributions to the growth and financial stability of the Community Hospice House, his absence from the future lives of his friends, family and coworkers will be felt for many, many years to come.

A client who became a special friend, I remember working on Brown´s Island projects with Keith! Also, Anthem Live, Anthem Blue Goo, Massey Cancer Center/Serena Williams and the Bon Secours Community Hospice House. He was so dedicated to each very successful project! Always smiling with a great big laugh. He will always have a special place in my heart for the love he gave to my Mother while she was at the Community Hospice House. Thoughts and prayers are with his wife and two children. He loved you very much and talked about you all the time! Our love, Doris Ann and Joe Kane
