James Proctor Obituary

PROCTOR, James "Jim" William, 59, of Glen Allen, Va., died June 11, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Leisa Agee Proctor; his son, Fletcher Proctor; nephews, Matt Merritt and Ross Merritt and his wife, Sarah; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charlie and Helen Sue Agee; and nephews, Marshall and Tyler Agee. During Jim's career in corporate purchasing, he was dedicated to helping minority businesses succeed. He twice served as chair of the Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council before being appointed to the position of Director of New Business Development for the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), where he served for the past 12 years. In this role, he was elected to the Board of the Business Consortium Fund and chaired the task force on Minority Business Constructs for the NMSDC. Jim was a charter member of Reveille United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board for many years, as well as becoming a Stephen Minister as part of the Caring Ministry of the church. Jim loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends at his home in Ocean Isle, N.C., where many cherished memories were created over the years. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Road. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Reveille United Methodist Church or to United Methodist Family Services, both in Richmond, Va.

Leisa and Fletcher,

There are a few people you meet in your lifetime that make an enduring impression on you. Jim was one of those people. He was funny, he was great dancer, he was an immediate friend, he was sincere and he truly cared about everyone he ever met. He was first-class. We will never forget Jim Proctor and we will, forever, recall that jovial, smiling face that was Jim Proctor. Only Jim could make a four-letter word sound like sugar and spice. We will always recall the few, but so joyful, times we spent with each of you in Laurinburg and at Ocean Isle. Fletcher, please know that Jim was so proud of you and he loved you as only a father can. We will miss Jim Proctor.

Leisa & Fletcher, I just learned yesterday of Jim's sad passing. He and I attended high school together (one year apart) and reconnected at Bank of Virginia/Signet Bank years later, and then our sons played baseball together. I always thought quite highly of Jim and throughly enjoyed his company. He was a genuinely nice man and one I'm proud to have called friend. I'm sorry we lost touch after he left the bank.
May God bless you and your family in this sad time and give you strength as you carry his memory forward.

Dear Leisa,

While we cannot begin to understand the great grief you must feel, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. As a teenager -- attending Methodist Youth camp at Lousiburg we would often sing a song -- "They will know we are Christians by our Love"....... I cannot tell you how many times I've thought of THAT song over and over the past few days in regard to Jimmy. They just don't make 'em much better than that man.

Again, know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Leisa...

I was so saddened to read of Jim's passing.
I am sorry that we lost touch with each other so many years ago.
I will always remember the fun times we spent shagging the night away at the local watering hole.
Jim was such an excellent dancer!!!
Remember the night Gayle broke her arm???
I will always remember Jim's great laugh and love of life. He was so much fun to be around.

Take care of yourself. If there is anything I can do, or if you ever want to talk, please don't hesitate to call me (804-399-4118)

Jim's family was special to mine, as we grew up together at Reveille.
His mother was my sister Alice's most favorite teacher at Fox School. His father worked with my parents, Ed and Nancy Garrett, at church also. And his dear sister Ann Merritt was such a sweet family-loving and fun-loving person. All of them will be sadly missed -- but we rejoice knowing that he was such a good witness for his faith! Blessings to each of you who will be missing him.

Leisa,
We, here in Laurinburg, were shocked and sadden today when we heard about Jim. When we think of him we see a smile, and a person all enjoyed being around and a very special dancer at our reunion parties. We are fortunate to have known him and although we didn't see him often , we will miss him dearly.

Leisa,
I am so sorry to hear this. I just saw you guys back in January at Va. Beach when Bassett and Ammon did their Soul Bubbas gig. It was a real treat for me to see and talk with Jim and you.
We met about 40 years ago when he came to see the band that Danny Jones and I were part of,"The Jokers Wild"; and I never forgot him. I mean how could you? What a pleasure to be around! I know how much he loved music; that's where I would see him over the years. I will truly miss not running into him. What a super-nice individual; and what a terrible loss for you, your son, your families and anyone who knew him. My heart goes out to you all. I am very saddened by this happening.
In Peace and Love,

Leisa & Fletcher, I was deeply saddened by Jim's passing. He was one of the first people I met at Reveille when I came as a guest of another charter member, Martha Lawrence, in November of 1980!! We have lost a fine friend, husband, & father. May our loss be not sad, but hopeful to all of us, because someday we all will be where he is, in a better place!!
