In 1970, he was transferred to Richmond to oversee the construction of the world's largest cigarette manufacturing plant on Commerce Road in South Richmond. He rose through the corporate ranks to become Executive Vice President of Operations for Philip Morris USA and Vice President of Philip Morris Companies, Inc. (now Altria) at their N.Y. office before taking early retirement in 1985. During his time with the company, Jim travelled extensively to Europe and Asia and developed many lifelong friendships. After leaving Philip Morris, he served as director of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries from 1987 until 1990. He was a member of the Forum Club, the Commonwealth Club, Willow Oaks Country Club and The Dominion Club, among others.
During his many years in Richmond, Jim served on several corporate and non-profit boards, in particular, The Bank of Virginia (now Wachovia) and Goodwill Industries. He, with his wife, Jean, was also a founding member of and instrumental in the development of Good Neighbor Village, a residential community founded in 1987 for adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities in Richmond.
Jim loved to talk, regaling those around him with stories of growing up during the depression, traveling around the world and working for one of the nation's largest companies. He was an avid reader and generous supporter of many charities and organizations. After his wife passed, during a Sunday drive, Jim happened upon Hebron Presbyterian Church in Manakin Sabot, where he became a well-loved member for the last years of his life.
