James Durwood Usry

USRY, James Durwood, of Richmond, Va., passed away on Monday, August 9, 2021. A graduate of Hermitage High School and University of Richmond, Durwood was the owner of Usry, Inc., a family business begun by his father in 1935. Durwood's commitment to continuing his family's legacy was equaled only by his dedication to serving the Richmond community. His service included sitting on many boards, supporting a variety of organizations, including serving as the President of The Rotary Club of Richmond (1997 to 1998). After retiring, Durwood's greatest passion was working to bring affordable and safe housing to all under-represented and marginalized Richmond-area residents, which he did through his work with Project Homes, a regional non-profit.

Durwood is survived by his wife, Deborah; daughters, Abigail Whorley (Massey), Marianne Fox; and five grandchildren, Charlie Fox, John Michael Fox, Lydia Whorley, Virginia Pryor Whorley and Wallace Whorley. He is also survived by his two brothers, Mead and Dwight Usry; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

In addition to being an incredibly creative person, Durwood was an avid sailor and someone with a gift for fixing just about anything. He leaves a legacy of quick wit, optimism, generosity and deep concern for others. He will be missed by many, including his constant fur-companion, Harry. Throughout every challenge, Durwood's persistent spirit and smile did not diminish.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Avenue, Richmond, Va.
