Jan Manwiller Obituary

MANWILLER, Jan Alfred, age 77, went peacefully on to the next woods to scout for deer, or another lake to catch that bigger bass on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. He loved and respected the outdoors and was careful to instill that love in his own children.

He passed at home, as was his wish.

As a child of WWII, Jan was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, while his father was serving in the Army. He was born on August 13, 1943, to Marion Hospers and Alfred Manwiller, both now deceased.

Later, his family resided in Florence, South Carolina, and he had lots of stories about growing up and enjoying the flora and fauna of his environment.

He moved to Virginia in 1963 to be closer to his future wife, Betty Martin, whom he had met in South Carolina where her family lived for a short while; lots of letters and phone calls caused a high school romance to become a lifelong love. Betty and Jan were married during Christmas break in 1965.

Jan graduated from RPI (now VCU), with a degree in psychology. He worked as a counselor with the Richmond School System for several years. He later became a Registered Stockbroker and was affiliated with several Richmond area firms from 1970 until his retirement in 2014.

His beloved daughter, Katie Manwiller, died on September 2, 1998, leaving a void in the family's collective heart.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Martin of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Sara Manwiller of Edwards, Colorado; and his son, Eric Manwiller (Mandie) of Chesterfield, Virginia.

Jan was "Bumpa" to his three grandchildren, Max Christenberry and Grace Christenberry of Edwards, Colorado and Scarlet Manwiller of Chesterfield, Virginia.

Also surviving are his three younger sisters, Karen Love Riley (Jon Michael) of Ashville, North Carolina, Terri Manwiller Hager (Bobby) of Oak Park, Illinois and Julie Manwiller-Thompson (James) of Seattle, Washington. They speak kindly and lovingly of their big brother.

Numerous extended Manwiller and Martin family members also live on.

A quiet memorial service may be held in 2021; we hope to gather family and friends in a natural setting...

Rather than flowers, please donate to a favorite charity or to Feed More at 1415 Rhoadmiller Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220.

Jan's Granddaddy Hospers gave him a copy of THE JUNGLE BOOK when he was born. He kept it, read it, and read it to his children. Baloo says, "Forget about your worries and your strife."

Mowgli, "What's that?"

Baloo: "That's a song about the good life."

I wanted the family to know the role Mr. Manwiller played in my life which was life changing. I dropped out of high school in 1967 as I needed to work to pay for my own basic needs. I weighed only 118 lbs at 5´10" tall. My parents were very poor, had many children and could barely feed us. We lived in a federal housing project. No one in my family finished high school. So I attended a pilot program at night at George Wythe High School. Mr Manwiller Mr. M came in to talk to us. He worked for the State Dept of Vocational Rehab. He offered career testing to see what we were best at. He worked with a woman named Hilda. He told me I had high Math and Science scores and told me there was a new college in town called ECPI. He asked if they paid for it would I be interested in attending. I did graduate from that school with a Computer Programming Certificate. He assisted with getting me eyeglasses too. As a result I had an IT career at MCV Hospital, which provided me and my family a much better level of living. My own children went to college. Without this intervention I feel sure I would have continued living much like my parents hand to mouth. I always wished I could tell him how significant a role he played in changing my life and breaking my life in poverty. If anyone wishes yo contact me they can 804 922 7774. I am 71 and live in Midlothian VA.

Betty and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Jan´s passing. I met him many years ago through a friend´s referral when I needed a financial advisor. Whenever we talked, he always had a funny story or a joke to tell. RIP Jan. I´m sure that God has made a place for you in Heaven´s woodlands and streams.
