PRICE, Janet "Jan" Wiethoff, was born July 31, 1944 in Key West, Fla. and was raised in Seymour, Ind. She was the daughter of Dr. Clifford Allen Wiethoff and Mary Lou Ferguson Wiethoff and the oldest of their four children. Her younger sister, Barbara Wiethoff Guthrie (Frank), predeceased her in 2013. Surviving are her brothers, Dr. Richard Allen Wiethoff (Mary), and John Clifford Wiethoff. Surviving also is a daughter, Mary Price Ellis (Andrew Claiborne "Ace"); six nephews and a niece, three great-nieces and seven great-nephews.
As a junior at Mary Baldwin College (now university), she met her husband of 55 years, who was then a student at Washington and Lee University. After college graduation, Mrs. Price worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. as a research assistant in the Department of Psychiatry until her marriage in October, 1967. Mr. Price joined the Air Force after his graduation in 1967 and, together, he and Mrs. Price spent four years living in different base locations including Korea, where Mrs. Price and their son, Joel Price, born in 1969, lived off base as was required by the Air Force. Mr. Price was discharged from service as a captain after which he continued his education at the University of Richmond Law School, receiving a degree in 1973. During that time, Mrs. Price worked as a social worker at the Richmond Area Psychiatric Clinic, which was an aftercare facility at the time. She later became a member of their board.
After his law school graduation, Mr. Price enjoyed a 32 year career as a civil litigator in Richmond. Their son, Joel, born at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa in 1969, predeceased Mrs. Price in 2011. Their daughter, Mary, was born in 1976.
Mrs. Price was involved in several volunteer organizations and particularly loved her time as a hospice volunteer. For more than four decades, she was part or multiple ministries at their church, St. Stephen's Episcopal in Richmond, where she was able to enrich her faith in a loving community with others on the faith journey with her. As a member of the church outreach committee, she became interested in outreach projects and made six mission trips with medical and construction teams to the Dominican Republic, where the teams helped build a church, a school and a daycare facility. During the medical missions, the teams attended to about 800 patients per trip.
For several years, she was a substitute teacher in two local schools and gave piano lessons in her home for 25 years. As a hobby, she spent many years painting in various media. She enjoyed writing music, poetry and, while in her 40s, short pieces for a few local publications.
Caring deeply for her large extended family and relationships with friends, she prioritized spending time with them as often as possible. In 2006, Mr. and Mrs. Price were fortunate to have met a widowed mother and her two young boys who emigrated from Nepal, and through the years, their family grew and now consists of her second husband and another son.
The Price family has remained very close with this family and treasures the bonds they have made. Through the church, the Prices have met and become very close with a family from Afghanistan. That family has grown from one child to three since they have come to the U.S. in 2015. They, also, have been a source or joy for the Prices.
Mrs. Price was a nature and animal lover and regarded the pets they had throughout the years as members of the family. The last few years, they have been happy to share many happy moments with their granddogs.
