Janie Goldie McGraw, 88, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, in Mechanicsville, Va.
Born on January 3, 1937, Janie was a proud graduate of Belvoir-Falkland High School's Class of 1955 in Greenville, N.C. She began her professional life working briefly as a secretary for the FBI before continuing her career in a hospital setting. Later, she dedicated over 30 years to Chesterfield Schools as a school bus driver, where she became a familiar and trusted presence in the community.
Janie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank McGraw, Sr.; her daughter, Tammie McGraw Darko; her parents, Paul and Audie McLawhorn Nelson; her sisters, Verna Mae Hardy and Betty Lou Dudas; and her brothers, James Elbert "Pete" Nelson, Paul Dalton Nelson, and Thurman Nelson.
She is survived by her son, Frank McGraw Jr.; and her brother, Luke Nelson. Janie cherished time spent with her family and grandchildren.
Known for her quiet and loving nature, Janie found joy in simple pleasures. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, reading tabloid magazines, watching sports, especially NASCAR and golf, and relaxing with Hallmark Channel movies. Traveling to Atlantic City with her best friend for the occasional gamble brought her much delight.
A memorial service to honor Janie's life will be held on Friday, September 19, at Affinity Funeral Services in Mechanicsville.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
