I know Jasper from his many years at Richmond's Vita Course.
I was devastated this morning to learn of his death. He was such a kind, gentle and wise man, one of my favorite people out there.
One morning, about nine years ago, I was running on the course and passed him. We exchanged good mornings. He was still a stranger then.
About 100 yards after passing him, in the middle of the course, I stopped running abruptly and then doubled back, now walking. "This is the three-mile finish line," I explained, pointing to the large beech tree and another tree opposite the course from it. He smiled like a grandma and in the most gentle voice said "Well, all right! Proud of you!"
Over the years, we became friendly and sometimes I would stop jogging and walk with him a while. He was so smart, always up on the latest news and politics.
A couple years ago, I was having a hard day. I had a dilemma I was grappling with. I called my husband from the vita course and we were talking through my situation and options. I stopped jogging and just walked the course, while talking on the phone.
Two days later, when I returned to the vita course (and with the situation now resolved), I saw Jasper. He flagged me down to talk to me, asking, "Are you alright?" I said I was. He said something like, "It seemed like you were really concerned/preoccupied two days ago. Is everything okay?"
I was so touched by that. I explained that, yes, I'd had a big dilemma I was dealing with, but that it had been resolved favorably.
His face changed upon this news; he was so glad everything was okay with me. I was so touched by that -- that he noticed that I had been distressed, that he had the courage and concern to stop me and check in with me.
I've told a handful of people that story, when explaining why I love the vita course so much. That space has the best sense of community.
Jasper was such a leader there -- so friendly, calm, wise, gentle, good.
I can't believe I won't see him again. He was such a lovely person.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Jasper was such a good, good man. His loss will be felt by so many.
