Joan Hodges Obituary

Joan Crown Hodges

November 10, 1969 - October 15, 2024

Joan Crown Hodges passed away in her home in Richmond, VA, surrounded by loved ones on October 15, 2024.

Born on November 10, 1969, Joan dearly loved her family and friends. She is survived by: husband, Art Hodges; son, Cole Hodges; daughter-in-law, Sophie Smith; mother, Mary Almond; and siblings Joyce Crown-Wilkins, John Crown III, and Jody Crown, along with extended family members. She was predeceased by her father, John Crown, Jr.

Joan was a witty writer, orator, and distinguished teacher (M.Ed., NBCT) who spent most of her career teaching middle school English in Henrico County. She loved the adventure of living with her family and teaching in Japan for 6 years. Joan retired after 28 years to embark on a new path as a marketing editor for RK&K. Although she left to fight lung cancer full-time, her family is grateful to the company and her coworkers for the support and grace they provided during her short tenure.

Joan's biggest gift was making connections with people; so she traveled, volunteered, advocated, officiated weddings, and instigated shenanigans. Being a mom to Cole was her greatest joy.

This song lyric reminds me of Joan: "It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you - It's what you leave behind you when you go." And you left so many sparkles of your life that will shine on in my life as a remembrance of you FOREVER.

Mrs. Hodges taught me so many values. Like my friend Sarah said, she supported everyone. She always made class so much more fun and really let everyone express themselves differently. Dear Mrs. Hodges we will cherish you forever. You were one of my favorite teachers in 2022 to 2023. 6th was amazing because of you and I truly hope you´re in a better place now.

She was my favorite teacher. She always looked out for me and was kind to me. She was a light at Holman, always showing kindness and support to everyone. I will miss her so much and remember all of the amazing memories in her classroom.

Mrs. Hodges was my middle school teacher. She was full of love and wisdom and always had the right answer to my problems. She was a teacher I had so much trust in and influenced me to become an educator. I´m currently in college majoring in elementary education and always think about her when someone asks me "why do you want to become a teacher"

Our thoughts and prayers to the Hodges and Crown families... We are so sorry for your loss. I was in high school with Joan and always knew her to be very friendly, an achiever and a wonderfully fun personality. May you feel God's enduring love, strength, comfort and peace in every prayer, card, hug and act of kindness. God bless and keep you through this difficult and sad time. We are thinking of you. I only knew Joan very briefly. Yet, in that short time, a connection grew that helped me through the process of losing my own Joan, my beloved Mom, who was also a gifted teacher. I do hope their energies mingle. Surely something miraculous will happen.
