John Stephen "Steve" Barnes

John Stephen "Steve" Barnes, 83, of Creswell, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026.

Born on September 24, 1942, in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of the late John William Barnes and Eunice Brake Barnes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Doak Barnes; daughter, Anne Kristine "Kris" Barnes and sister, Charlene Miller.

Steve dedicated many years of his career as a Soil Scientist working with NC State University, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, and First Colony Farms. A proud graduate of NC State University, he had a deep passion for studying organic soil and agriculture Through his work, he developed lasting friendships with many local farmers and was highly respected for his knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help others.

He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, where he devoted more than twenty years to teaching youth Sunday School. Steve also served his church as a deacon, demonstrating his strong faith and commitment to serving his church family and community. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, who were the center of his life.

HIs family includes son, Kyle William Barnes (Paula) of Washington, NC; sister, Nancy Hughes (Billy) of Callao, VA; brother, David Barnes (Grace) of Richmond, VA.; grandchildren, Laken Barnes, Thomas Barnes, Claire Barnes, Brantley Brinn, and Collin Brinn.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Hagwood officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends prior to the service at 2 to 2:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church.
