John Cain Obituary

John Morgan Cain

September 7, 1955 - September 29, 2024

John Morgan Cain died on September 29, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia, following a brief illness in the midst of chronic health issues. His wife Tracey Finch Cain and their children Ryland Cain and Miranda Cain Howell (Gage) survive him, along with his sisters Lisa Cain Davis (Bruce), Judy Cain (Jackie Lupo), and Jackie Cain. John is also served by loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a host of long-time friends. He was predeceased by his parents Nancy Morgan Cain and E. V. Cain, Jr.

John was born on September 7, 1955, in Norfolk, Virginia. He grew up in a military family, residing in various U.S. cities, Guam, and France, before settling in Fairfax, Virginia. Growing up, John's passions were guitar, swimming, and sportscars. He graduated from W. T. Woodson high school in 1974 and Virginia Tech in 1979. He began his career as a draftsman and retired as a professional engineer and Principal with Salas O'Brien.

John and Tracey met in high school, were married in 1977, and raised their family in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Richmond, Virginia. The family became Quakers while living in Harrisburg and carried that faith with them through their lives.

John was soft-spoken and quiet, with a twinkle in his eye and a quick wit. He loved tinkering with cars. His family, friends, and colleagues remember John for his integrity, steadfastness, kindness, and most of all, for his fierce dedication to his family.

A celebration of John's life will be held at Richmond Friends Meeting, 4500 Kensington Avenue, on November 2, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be sent to the American Lung Association, Richmond Friends Meeting, or the charity of your choice.
