John Coleman "Jack" Christian
April 28, 1948 - October 5, 2025
John Coleman Christian "Jack", a man of sharp wit, steadfast faith, and enduring intellect, passed away peacefully with his family and Episcopal faith on October 5, 2025, at the age of 77. A lifelong Virginian, Jack lived a life marked by curiosity, integrity, and a deep appreciation for both work and leisure.
Born on April 28, 1948, Jack grew up with a love of learning and a natural inclination toward precision and problem-solving traits that would serve him well throughout his distinguished career. A proud graduate of finance with a Masters in Business Administration of Virginia Commonwealth University, he embodied the spirit of a true Ram, driven, thoughtful, and loyal.
Jack devoted his professional life to public service, culminating in his tenure as Controller for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. His sharp analytical mind, steady leadership, and encyclopedic knowledge of state operations earned him deep respect among colleagues and peers throughout the Commonwealth.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jack found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid golfer, he cherished time on the fairway with friends, where laughter and good-natured competition abounded. In his younger years, he was equally at home on the water, finding both peace and exhilaration in sailing with his sons.
A proud Episcopalian, Jack was a devoted member of Westover Parish, where his faith grounded him and guided his service to others. His thoughtful conversations, gentle humor, and gracious spirit enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Jack will be lovingly remembered for his intelligence, his wit, and his strong spirit. He is survived by his sons, Gordon (Kelly) Christian, Mike (Paola) Tardy, Paul (Steve) Tardy; grandchildren, Pierce, Yeardley, Sean and Peyton; and his brother, Ned (Sharon) Christian. He is also survived by his fiancee, Beth Herndon Snitzer; several cousins and many cherished friends and colleagues who will carry forward his memory with affection and gratitude. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Coleman Christian; and wife of 44 years, Mrs. Peggy Cone Christian.
A service celebrating Jack's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Westover Episcopal Church. The family asks that donations be made in Jack's memory to the Meals on Wheels program in Charles City, VA.
