John James Dutton, Sr.

John "Jack" James Dutton, age 93, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, in Richmond, VA. He was born in Philadelphia on January 22, 1931, to Benjamin Harding Dutton and Veronica Elizabeth Barrett Dutton.

Jack most recently resided in Williamsburg, VA, but in his earlier life, he also lived in Philadelphia, PA; Roanoke, VA; Virginia Beach, VA; Charlotte, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; Richmond, VA; and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Growing up in Philadelphia, he attended St. Thomas More High School and graduated in June 1949. Jack enlisted in the Marines in 1952. After basic training, he shipped out to Korea where he served for several years. Upon his arrival Stateside, Jack was employed by Chevrolet and later by General Motors (GM), Overseas division. A company man, he worked for GM for thirty years until his retirement in 1986.

Jack is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Lou. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Jack Dutton, Jr. (Tonya Barnes), Edward Dutton (Elizabeth) and Susan Grammer. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Dutton and Brian Barrett Grammer. He is predeceased in death by his parents and his older brother, Benjamin Dutton, Jr.

Jack was a great man who never desired wealth or opulence and preferred a comfortable but simple life. He rooted for the less fortunate underdogs. He enjoyed baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox.

The family will celebrate Jack's life at noon on Friday, September 13, 2024, at St. Bede's Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg VA, 23188. Interment will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA 22172.
