John Slaughter Obituary

John G. Slaughter

John G. Slaughter, 83, died peacefully at home on January 13, 2025. John was born on July 22, 1941, to the late Louise Slaughter Dooley and Gilbert O. Slaughter, Jr. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy B. Slaughter; his second wife, Karina S. Slaughter; and his brother-in-law, Roy L. Tatum. John is survived by his sister, Betty S. Tatum; his niece, Wendy T. Fields (John); his nephew, Troy L. Tatum (Brandy); his stepson, William L. Simon, Sr. (Cathy); and their children, Olivia S. Maynes (Michael) and William L. Simon, Jr.; as well as many other family members and lifelong friends. The family wishes to express their thanks to Linda Marsh for her many years of care and concern for John and Karina.

John grew up in Highland Springs and was a graduate of Highland Springs High School, class of 1959. He served in the Army Reserve, graduated from RPI (now VCU), and began a career working for Ford Motor Co. for 30 years. After retiring from Ford, he was hired as assistant to the athletic director at VCU, serving in this role for eight years. He was a strong supporter and avid fan for many years of VCU basketball. During this time he built relationships with many of the players and mentored them in the years that followed.

John will be remembered for his wonderful and sometimes colorful "stories," stories of memorable travels with Nancy and Karina; tales of experiences, especially with Ford Motor Co.; and those of his love for gardening, landscaping his yards, and above all, his love of cooking!

Many words described John. Dedicated to his family; supportive of his wives and their careers; cherished the many travels together with his wives, family, and friends; avid reader and history buff; ambitious; he learned the value of earning money early in life, beginning with a job at eight years old. He continued to support and encourage others to teach about savings and investing, sharing advice often. As he would say, "Some listened, some didn't!"

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, VA, with a Celebration of Life beginning at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. John leaves you with these last words, "I am the sum of my memories and the stories I told!" "It is what it is!"

We were so blessed to have met John and Karina on a Disney Cruise. Such wonderful people. Then we spent some time with John at Disney World and had fun on some rides together. Our son Timmy loved the rides with you John!
