Johnnie Ebelein Obituary

Johnnie C. Ebelein

September 14, 2025

Johnnie C. Ebelein passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work and commitment to family and faith.

Johnnie was predeceased by her dear husband, Albert ("Al") W. Ebelein, and is survived by her two devoted daughters, Suzanne Harley and Mary Owens; two cherished grandchildren, Colin (Katelyn) and Allison (Grant); one adored great-grandson. She took immense pride in her family members and their accomplishments and happiness.

Johnnie began her banking career in the late 1950s at First Federal Savings & Loan, where she forged a path as a pioneering working mother. Her dedication, work ethic, and seeming ability to balance it all served as an inspiration to many.

A woman of quiet faith and compassion, Johnnie was a founding member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC. After her move to Midlothian, VA in 2018, Johnnie initially worshiped at St. Steven's Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA and later at Redeemer Episcopal Church in Midlothian. For many years, she gave generously of her time as a volunteer with the St. Francis Foundation in Greenville, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear.

Johnnie loved to play bridge with friends, most recently at St. Mark's Methodist Church or at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Midlothian. She also enjoyed travel, always making new friends along the way.

A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Episcopal Church, 2341 Winterfield Road, Midlothian, VA 23113 on Friday, September 26th at 2pm. The service will also be livestreamed. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Redeemer Foundation or any charity of your choice in Johnnie's memory.

She was a one of a kind, sweetest, kindest and hardest working woman I have ever known. She was always there for everyone. My deepest sympathy to her family, thank for sharing your
mother with me and all the employees at The First.

What a dear friend and beautiful person Johnnie was to me and my husband, John. Whether a party within our home, dinner out, or Bon Secours St. Francis events Johnnie always shared her gifts with our ministry! Her spirit would light up a room with cheer and love; and her servant heart shined through in all that she did every day! Her love of family, her strong faith, and care and concern for friends was a gift to us all. Spending time with Johnnie was always a treat no matter what we were doing together, her joy of life was a blessing to us all. Her letters and cards in the mail (After her move from Greenville) were always a treat for us when they arrived, filled with her unique spirit of love and joy. We will miss the beautiful spirit of life that Johnnie shared with everyone.

Suzanne & Mary, I am so sad to read about Johnnie's passing. I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Bon Secours St. Francis in Greenville and had the honor and pleasure of knowing sweet Johnnie where she served as a volunteer for the Foundation and for LifeWise. Johnnie was a friend and a mentor for me about life in general! I can still see Johnnie working in the office with a St. Francis throw around her shoulders because she was always cold. I still have that throw as it always makes me smile as it reminds me
of Johnnie. Johnnie made a big impact on folks at St. Francis because of her beautiful smile, her laughter and always her warm embrace of people. Johnnie lived life to the fullest because of the two of you and her grandchildren. I love you Johnnie! God bless.

So hard to believe there is now a world without sunny Johnnie Ebelein. She always lit up a room with her smile and warmth. But she got a 1000 watt smile whenever she spoke about her grandchildren. May her memory always be a blessing for your family. I know she will be missed.
