Friends and family are invited to join us at Samis Grotto, 4028 MacArthur Avenue, Richmond, Virginia. Food will be pot luck, so please bring a dish for no more than 10. Beverages will be provided.
If any friends would care to contribute, we are accepting donations to offset the costs. Any overage will be donated to the charity specified by Joe's family, the St. Malachy Church of Philadelphia.
Please contact me if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you at The Grotto.

Looking back over all the time I spent with Joe, from the very beginning of my first year at Va.Tech, my main impression is that his designs on life were remarkable. He truly forged his own path that had little if anything to do with any status quo, yet he was totally compassionate. His knowledge and taste in music, writing, films, and art was eclectic and extensive, and his own artful workings took the mundane into the surreal. And hilarious.
His sharp and often bizarre wit was unstoppable. Playing guitars with Joe was always a load of fun too, and he introduced me to alot of good music.
His absence from us now is awfully palpable, but he will long live on in our fond memories.

I don't know anyone in Richmond who didn't know Joe, either through music, sports, restaurants, or his stories/quips/philosophical endeavors. I met him fifteen years ago in a fan bar on my 21st birthday, and at first, I thought, "Who is this crazy guy with the dreadlocks?" Next thing I know, he's saying, "You're Catholic, aren't you?" He always liked a good Catholic or a fallen Catholic, and only last year, while cooking at Dot's, he asked my friend Amy the same question. He could spot Catholics. He was funny and wry and kind, and I am going to miss him very much. I think the whole city is going to miss him.

I've known Joe since High school. I moved to Richmond to go to college and then one day there was Joe, hanging out with people who were my friends and those who would become my friends. I hadn't seen him for a while and the one day I was riding my bike and saw this guy 2 blocks away riding a bike and I said to myself - that's Joe. I caught up to him and we talked like we saw each other eveyday. I would see him 3 or 4 times a year,, he'd be riding his bike to work, I'd be riding mine and we'd always talk about something I'd completely forgotten about. I'll miss you Joe. But we'll get together and play those same old tunes soon enough.

May the good saints protect you,
And bless you today.
And may troubles ignore you,
Each step of the way.
Godspeed Joe Gliatto, Godspeed on your new journey.
I know Joe would probably think this is silly, this little Irish blessing, but i'm hoping that deep down he would secretly be touched.

I was lucky enough to share an apartment with Joe for a year in Blacksburg and have many good memories from that time. He had such a great attitude towards life and was a catalyst for me in many things. He introduced me to some great music such as John Fahey and Steeleye Span. His stream of conscience lyrics had to be experienced. He even starred in one of my films for school. It's hard to believe that we won't be dueting on the Patty Duke theme anymore or repeating our favorite lines about smashing something with a fork. "I have!" Hopefully he's now singing a duet with Ira Louvin while eating a Snack-Pak.
He was a great guy and will be missed.

We were so very saddened when Louis called this morning to tell us about Joe's death. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you both and John's extended family.

The Parallel Park Café is closed, never to re-open. Where will we go to get ready for the game, to make lurching soft music after the show, to forget the day’s worries in the setting sun? The stories told there stayed there with us, but now we cannot go back. How will we ever walk by and not look to see if Joe has the place open for business?

Joe will definitely be missed by me and my family, he was amazing. He was awesome with my daughter because he was a big kid on the inside and I am glad that I got to spend some time, sometimes late nights, in his company. He absolutely had the best humor and wit to offer no matter what the situation and was actually good at knowing what other people were about (even if they didn't know it yet). And when he let you get close enough to hug him, you knew you were in. I read other people's entries and it made me laugh, not at Joe's passing, but at the many moments where he could laugh at you, with you and especially at others. (The penguin head should be kept in memoriam)...peace out Joe.

Words can't express my sadness at the loss. I do remember one bit from when we were at Tech together. He loved playing with my daughter at the time and was quite fond of my Dr. Seuss collection. To this day, she still refers to him as one of her favorite childhood playmates. He will be missed by many. God bless.

Joe was my hero. I liked hanging on the porch, looking for uncle scabs and then wearing the penguin head and waving to people who drove by or walked by. Remember when you were the ref when a bunch of us played switch? Sometimes you would get involed in Mike and I's egg toss championship outback of Dot's. I can't believe when I visit Richmond im not going to see any Jimmy age 6 scribble anywhere- one of your ingenious creations. Who am I going to collect crusafixes for now? Who will sit on me and say "OH i'm sorry I didn't see you there." Who is going to touch my ear with their enormous dreadlock coil? (that was actually kinda gross but coming from you it was affectionate? haha.) I liked GTR of our clients when we were bored or having a theme of the day to keep our moral up. I will miss the bejesus out of you. You are awesome. I don't know why this note turned into a personal letter to Joe at parts, thats okay though, he can read it too. Apart from all the fun we had you were admiradble and sweet in life and Im 100% sure you are now in spirit. I will miss you in my lifetime and sorry I didnt get to see you as of late. I will miss you Joe...

Joe,
Your determination to strive for the ridiculous (as opposed to the ubiquitous) was a bromide that never wore thin. I've too many other things to say, and don't wish to descend into the realm of the sappy and maudlin (and run the risk of you reminding me of what a 'Molly Maguire cur' I am).
Suffice it to say that you are, and will always be, loved and missed.
