Joseph Seipel Obituary

SEIPEL, Joseph Henry, age 76, passed away peacefully at home on June 12, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lidvina and Roman Seipel, and brother, Don Seipel. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Suzanne; daughter, whom he absolutely adored, Chloe Callahan (Mikey); grandchildren, Joseph Roman "J.R." and Owen Sean Callahan; sister, Marlene Jagodinski (Ron); brother, Ken Seipel (Rose Marie), sister-in-law, Mary Seipel; and 15 nieces and nephews.

In the days and weeks prior to his passing, Joe was surrounded by unwavering support and love from family, friends, and members of the Richmond community. A fixture in the local art scene, Joe had an incredible impact throughout his 42 year career at VCU. During his 17 year stint as professor and chairman, Joe led the sculpture department to its number one MFA sculpture program ranking by U.S. News and World Report. Later, in his five years as Dean of the School of the Arts, Seipel led VCUarts to its highest ranking ever, and was instrumental in the concept, planning, and fundraising for the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), an artistic educational and cultural center for both the students of VCU and Richmonders at large. His many accolades include a Life Time Achievement Award for Sculpture Education from the International Sculpture Center; 2012 Theresa Pollak Lifetime Achievement Award; University of Wisconsin, School of Education, Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award; and 2018 Person of the Year by the Richmond Times Dispatch, among others.

Joe's influence on the city dates back even further to 1978, when he co-founded 1708 Gallery, the nation's oldest artist-run nonprofit for contemporary art. Four years later, he partnered to open the Texas-Wisconsin Border Café, a local favorite for artists, businessmen, and ne'er-do-wells alike to gather for a beer and their famous widowmaker chili. There he achieved his greatest accomplishment of all: meeting his wife, Suzanne.

In the years since his retirement, and after his first and second un-retirements to step in as interim dean at FIT in New York and interim director of the ICA, Joe returned to full time studio practice. He enjoyed trips to Philly to visit his daughter, son-in-law and grandsons, was a regular for Sunday afternoon beers at The Cask, and made homemade pizza to enjoy with Suzanne every Friday night.

Throughout a life spent accruing countless professional accolades and forging close relationships with friends, Joe's most profound source of pride remained the embodiment of love and happiness in his life, his daughter, Chloe. Sharing with her his identically kind eyes and a deep love for each other, Joe organized every aspect of his life to maximize quality time spent with his daughter, and made sure to end even the shortest conversation with Chloe saying a warm "I love you."

Thank you to Joe's niece and hospice nurse, Paige Karch, with Serenity Hospice for her love and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Institute for Contemporary Art, 601 W. Broad Street, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 3 p.m. Parking will be available in the West Broad Street deck. The world lost one of the quiet greats with Joe Seipel.

Thanks, man. The older I get, the more I realize how much you taught me-sure, about art-but mostly about life.

This is such sad news. What an immense loss! I met Joe at my sister's wedding reception June 21, 1969. I was a senior in HS and he was working towards his MFA at UW Madison. He took me to my senior prom the following year and broke my heart when I moved to Madison to go to school and he moved to Boulder. We lost touch over the years but I thought of him often. Such a beautiful man! I can only hope that there's a 602 Club in heaven where he Is hanging out with the rest of the artists that have passed on.

Dear Suzanne, Chloe and family... I first met Joe thru my late husband, Chuck, at the The Border.."Nice Guy"... he was always smiling, always made a point of saying hello, such a people person! I even remember being with the gang when Suzanne went into labor with Chloe!! Chloe was the apple of his eye.. as he would often give me the update when I saw him. Suzanne, I know you and Chloe have wonderful memories that you will cherish for the rest of your lives! I hope those memories bring you both much peace... Kim Lewis

Joe was a partner in crime. I ran Brandcenter and hit the walls of Academia on occasion. Joe was guiding the School of the Arts to the top and hit the same walls. He was someone to commiserate with. But more important, to laugh with. He took situations, but not himself, very seriously. He was a great leader and a great person. I consider myself lucky to have known him. Sending love and condolences to his wife, Suzanne, and family.

I have two Joe stories. He was one of my first VCU professors in my Art Foundation classes. He gave a slide show about a project he did in college... a weird sculpture he called the "Enviro-Plug". It was a wedge-shaped chunk of metal that he took to an engineering trade show as a joke. He even branded a borrowed truck with a made-up logo and designed a brochure. He actually engaged some environmental engineers in a discussion about the "product." Almost made a sale. He laughed through the entire slide show at his ruse. We did as well. For one of our projects we were to fill a page with color samples in a creative way. I did a painting with funny line-art cartoons incorporating my color samples. I named one of the colors "dry tongue." He started to laugh almost to the point of choking at that one. So-I will remember Joe for an important lesson I´ve adhered to my entire career: don´t take everything so seriously. I will also remember the big guy for his wonderful laugh and fantastic sense of humor. RIP, sir.

Dear Suzanne and family, please accept my sympathies. What a great human being, friend to all that crossed his path. A wonderful loving wife and family by his side. What more could we want to have shared in our lives...what a legacy he has left behind. We should all be so lucky. With all my love
