Josephine Locke Obituary

Josephine Driskill Locke of Drakes Branch, departed for her Heavenly home on March 26, 2005. She was born on October 19, 1921 to the late Joseph Berryman and Janie Daniel Driskill, and lived her entire life on the family farm. In August 1940, she married T.E. (Ed) Locke. Following the death of her husband in 1966, she became a substitute teacher at Randolph-Henry High School, and worked with the Charlotte County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Later, she worked in the Charlotte County Library and served as the county librarian for several years before retiring in 1992. While there, she became known as an unofficial genealogist and historian of Charlotte County. We are somewhat surprised that she passed away, because she loved the county so much that she never wanted to leave it. Her son, T.E. (Ned) Locke Jr., his wife, Penny, and their children, Joseph and Kate E., survive her. She is also survived by her "baby sister", Sarah D. Glascock of Green Bay, whom she helped raise following the untimely death of their mother. Other survivors include Sarah's husband, Mike, John and Rachel Locke, Owen Locke, Henry Barksdale, Jessie Mae Locke; two nieces and three nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice D. Glascock and Frances D. Wagman; and a grandson, Benjamin Lee Locke. The family will receive friends at the Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and at the home of her son at other times. Services will be held at the Drakes Branch Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday followed by interment in the Drakes Branch Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad, Drakes Branch Baptist Church, the Charlotte County Library or a charity of your choice.

Ned, your mother was such a sweet, dear person. I enjoyed my friendship with her back in the '70s so much. She loved you dearly and often expressed her love for you, the county and so many others. God bless you in your loss. Her sweet disposition will be missed by all who knew her and I count myself lucky to be counted among those.
