Rick, this message is long overdue, but I wanted to reach out to you after your loss of Vaughan. We have met before, many years ago, possibly when Vaughan was in "A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Coliseum." :) My mom, Corky, was a lifelong friend of Vaughan's, and she used to regale me with Vaughan stories from their childhood and teen years. My mom passed away shortly before Vaughan did, in January of 2024. I know that sometime during 2023, she had made phone contact with you and Vaughan, and it meant the world to her. I am so glad you all were in contact then. I have kept you in my prayers for comfort after the loss of your wonderful spouse, which I'm afraid i didn't find out about until recently. With love and hugs, Ruth

I know that this is months after Vaughan´s death, but I feel compelled to write something in honor of this dear person. For the past few weeks, I´ve been thinking about people who I worked with in the past. I googled his name and saw the news of his death. I met Vaughan in the 1980´s when we worked at United Way in Richmond. He was a staff person and later became the director of RSVP (the Retired Senior Volunteer Program) in the Community Resource Division. I was the director of I&R (the Information & Referral Center in the same division. I have met few people who possessed the qualities and sensibilities that Vaughan did. Highly intelligent, unassuming, compassionate, humorous , passionate...I could go on and on. I remember when he met Rick and we were introduced. The love between them radiated and I was happy for their obvious happiness. Vaughan made me laugh, made me listen and made me believe in the value of all humanity. Rest peacefully, dear friend.

I was a student at JFK, in the first 'official' graduating class, 1967. Mr. Gary was delighted when he found that I worked part-time at Shady Grove Music Fair theater in the round. It was as if we were kindred spirits. I have thought of him so fondly over the years. Kindest man.

Vaughan was an extraordinary human being, teacher, and friend. I will miss his laugh and great sense of humor. He loved the theatre and the arts and willingly shared his knowledge of it with others. Rick, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Just learned of his passing, scrolling through the internet. My condolences to you. Talk soon.

"Mr. Gary" was my English teach at John F. Kennedy HS. He was kind and smart. What I remember most was the slide photos he shared of his trip to Greece. May his memory be everlasting.

We met in 1964 (9th grade for me) his English class. I was in several of his classes throughout the 4 years at Kennedy. He was a personal confidant not only to me but to many students. He ragged on me about my writing skills, saying "I know you can do better." and eventually I did. He always encouraged me to reach within myself and pull out a better me.
I have always had fond memories of him and always will. RIP

I met Mr Gary in the 9th grade at JFK high school. For the next four years he shared his love for the theater. I took every class with him I could and he instilled in me a deep love of performing. Now 50 years later I'm on the stage again and am so thankful for having had this wonderful teacher in my life.

Thoughts of Vaughan and his unique personality always brought a smile to my face. He loved life and lived it to the fullest with the best partner he could have chosen, Rick Smith. His talents were endless and so was his amazingly beautiful and thick head of hair!

Vaughan was a delight. Never met a stranger and always had a kind word. You and he had the most beautiful love story. So glad I could see it first hand. He loved you so much just as we all loved him.
