Kara Butcher Obituary

Kara Kunkel Butcher

April 12, 1970 - February 21, 2025

Kara Kunkel Butcher, 54, passed away unexpectedly in her home on February 21, 2025. Born in Cockeysville, Maryland to the late William "Bill" R. Kunkel and Gail B. Kunkel, she was raised first in Maryland and Michigan before spending most of her upbringing in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Kara was an avid figure skater throughout her youth, skating competitively at multiple levels from the ages of 11 to 17. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy and received her bachelor's degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College. She later moved to Richmond where she spent her career in fashion sales at Britches, Francos, and most recently as an independent sales agent for Cabi Clothing.

Kara's true passion was her family. She was a devoted wife, sister, and "supermom", never missing an opportunity to serve as the Girl Scouts troop leader, the chief dance mom, or the lacrosse concessions organizer. She never let her children leave the house without a coat and full stomach, no matter the weather or when they last ate. She also loved caring for her pets, often sneaking away on the weekend for a trip to the river with her beloved dog, Bixley. Kara will be most remembered for her abundance of love and compassion, showing nothing but kindness to everyone she encountered.

Kara is survived by her husband, Robert "Butch" G. Butcher III; her children, Grace M. Butcher and Robert "Bobby" G. Butcher IV; her brother, Craig A. Kunkel; brother-in-law, Guy B. Butcher (Cary); sisters-in-law, Laura C. "Christy" Butcher and Shelley L. Kunkel; niece, Ella Kunkel; and two nephews, Jack and Charlie Butcher.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8th at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave, with a reception to follow. The interment at Hollywood Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a preferred charity of choice.

Dear Butch, Grace and Bobby,
There are no words to convey my sorrow on the unexpected loss of your beloved wife and mother. Kara will always live in my heart as one of the kindest, warmest and most lovely people I have ever known. What a privilege to have been her neighbor for so many years and to witness her love for all of you and Bixley. My heart goes out to each of you.

I was devastated to hear this news. Kara was such a beautiful person, inside and out. I spent many years working with her during her career with cabi and words cannot express how truly lovely she was. Her warmth and kindness touched so many lives. My deepest condolences to Butch, Grace, and Bobby. I am praying for your comfort and peace.

I am heartbroken to here of Kara's passing. I will always cherish the memories we had with her at dance competitions and recitals ... sitting together and nervously waiting for our children to take the stage, laughing over meals, celebrating, and supporting each other in the 'Dance Mom' struggles. Kara was kind, giving, funny, and always fun. To Grace, her Husband, and her Son ~ Please know you all are in my prayers. Kara was truly one of a kind!
