Linda Marcuse Obituary

MARCUSE, Linda Carol, 67, passed away on Sept. 8, 2023, in Richmond. Born on April 8, 1956 to parents Elaine and Ernest Marcuse, she is survived by her lifelong partner Rodger Higgs; their beloved children, Ian Shane Marcuse and Elena Natalya Marcuse; brother Alan Marcuse and his children, Elizabeth and Spencer. Linda grew up in Falls Church, Va. and moved to Richmond where she earned her social work degree at VCU and began her life's work of making legendary delicious food. From Grace Place to her own businesses, A Movable Feast and private catering, she used her creativity in cooking and her compassion and generosity in mentoring co-workers who remain thankful for her wisdom and warmth. She loved her garden full of colorful pots overflowing with flowers, including many varieties of pansies, that bloomed all year long. Other interests included doing crossword puzzles with friends, making art, film, travel and music. With the outpouring of sorrow for Linda's passing, her many friends have expressed gratitude for knowing her, calling her a force of positive energy with an endearing sense of fun, beautiful, friendly, outspoken, hilarious, self-effacing, tender, refreshing, spontaneous, enchanting, charismatic, dear, and most of all, full of love for her friends, family and their cat, Boscoe. She so appreciated the support of friends during her illness, especially her "three sisters," Anita Castle, Barbara Jones and Kathleen Morelli. Linda will be profoundly missed, but her many gifts will live on in our hearts, and her spirit will forever inspire us to live with passion, humanity and a little bit of magic.

Linda gave me a cookbook, the start of one anyway with half a dozen or so recipes as a birthday and going away present. It was an empty journal and since then I have added more over the 42 years since leaving Richmond. Linda was basically my boss. I was a waiter at Grace Place. I will always remember her kindness and generosity. I was sad to read of her passing. I was looking for her to say thank you for the pesto recipe she shared. And I too, 42 years later can remember that laugh and her incredible creativity in the kitchen. My kindest regards to her family whom I know filled her life.

Linda was a remarkable, stellar and talented human being. I met and knew her from her early business- the pleasure of eating her food and hanging out when I could take a break. My condolences to the family she prized and loved.

Linda always made me feel at home and like I belonged whenever I got to spend time with her and her son Ian. Their family is part of what makes Richmond a good place.

The world surely became a bit darker without Linda's light. Her family and friends will carry on in her footsteps, finding inspiration in her goodness.
