Lindsay Hunt Obituary

HUNT, Dr. Lindsay M., Jr., was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1939. His family moved around during his youth and he spent time in Oklahoma City, Memphis and Little Rock during his formative years. He graduated high school from Northwest Classen in Oklahoma City in 1957.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1961 and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He then attended the Baylor College of Dentistry and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1965 where he finished top of his class. Upon graduation Dr. Hunt served in the United States Navy Dental Corps from 1965 to 1967. He returned to academics and earned his Ph.D. in Physiology with a minor in Biochemistry from the Baylor University Graduate School in 1971. In 1971, Dr. Hunt joined the Emory University School of Dentistry serving as both a professor and administrator until being named Dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in 1985. He served as Dean of the School until 1998. During his tenure he placed a heavy emphasis on professionalism and ethics. His contributions included leading extensive renovations to the school's physical facilities as well as a redesign of the clinical curriculum. These improvements included the VCU Philips Institute of Oral and Craniofacial Molecular Biology, extensive improvements in clinical operations and infection control protocols. He was named the Harry Lyons Professor in 1993. He was active with professional organizations and served as Chair of the American Association of Dental Schools, now titled the American Dental Education Association.

Nationally, Dr. Hunt served on the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation and the Council on Dental Education. Locally he was a member of the Virginia Dental Association and the Richmond Dental Society serving on the Board of Directors for each organization.

During his younger days, he enjoyed restoring E-type Jaguars and showing them at Jaguar Car Club of Atlanta meets, always winning first place. He also enjoyed working with gold and making jewelry for family and friends. Both of his sons were avid soccer players and he was incredibly supportive and never missed a game.

He enjoyed traveling, especially in his retirement years as long as his health permitted. He'd hoped to go back to England one more time as he loved the Cotswolds.

He passed away on December 18, 2020. He was preceded in death by parents, Lindsay and Toistine Hunt; and sister, Carolyn. His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Patricia Hunt; sons, Lindsay Hunt III and Geoffrey Hunt; daughter-in-law, Kendall Hunt; grandson, Patrick; sister, Nancy Wirth; sister-in-law, Lynn Kling; nephew, Steve Wirth.

He will be missed and remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
