The Atlantic Coast Observer Network - Virginia/North Carolina/South Carolina is saddened by the news of Lowell's passing. For 28 years, Lowell was a faithful contributor to our weather database ( http://genserva.com/acon ) . He never missed a monthly submission of his stations' data, first by mail (August 1995) and ending with his final submission via email in December 2022. Visits to his Barcroft Hills weather station in Falls Church and to his Springfield Park station in Glen Allen were a highlight for members of our organization. Never have we known such a devoted, detailed and accurate weather watcher and historian. Thank you Lowell for your friendship and steadfast work.

A Long-time Friend

Lowell, . . . caring soul, good conversationalist, intellectual individual,
science-oriented soul, master gardener, avid historical researcher, and
compassionate confidante. My friend, you will be missed in many ways; far
more than words can possibly express. We shared many memories and, in
the end, shared the same diagnosis of an insidious disease - pancreatic
cancer. I will think of you as I observe the clouds in the sky; I will
remember you as I enjoy the fall of a gentle rain. I will miss you but rejoice
that we had the opportunity to connect in this life. Good-bye, my friend. I
will feel your presence in the evening breeze, and when I find a feather, I
will know that you are watching over your family and friends with the same
love and compassion that you exhibited in life. Rest well in the knowledge
you will always be loved.

My favorite Science teacher of all time and an all around delightful human being. He radiated pure enthusiasm for teaching. I will never forget my first elementary school field trip to the planetarium. He did an inspiring presentation on NASA's new space shuttle concept that I never forgot. I feel certain he is already excitedly exploring the universe from his new perspective.

Mr. Koontz made science fun. He would get excited when a student performed well, with his rememberable response, "YOU´RE RIGHT!"
He taught me learning should be fun.

Mr. Koontz was my Earth Science teacher at Hayfield Secondary School in 1971. I enjoyed his class very much. Much later, probably 1999-ish, I chaperoned my son´s field trip to the planetarium and there was Mr. Koontz! He still had the same smile and the same enthusiasm for his science. I was happy to be able to talk to him and tell him how much I had enjoyed being in his class. He left a lasting impression on me - I still love quartzite! Rest In Peace Mr. Koontz - now you can really enjoy your view of the stars and earth. My condolences to your family.

I met Lowell on his first day at Hayfield HS. He was five years my junior, so I called him "kid". He helped me teach a subject, Earth Science, which I had no training. Through that help and doing lunch everyday in John Dieringer's classroom we became friends. When we scattered to other schools, I missed his friendship. I've followed his weather page off & on for years. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his family.

Sympathy and Prayers to Marie and Family for their loss. Lowell was a master of history of the planetariums in Fairfax, a wonderful teacher, an engineer of great imagination, and a true friend.
The sky will be a constant reminder of his time on Earth,
John Dieringer

Lowell was a great friend and always did an excellent job at whatever he attempted. Whether it was teaching earth science, inventing projectors for the planetarium, growing tomatoes, documenting ancestry, or his favorite - tracking the weather from his home and publishing it on the Glen Allen Springfield Park Weather Center.
I will miss my good friend.
