Malcolm Briggs Obituary

BRIGGS, Malcolm, On March 25, 2023, Malcolm Briggs was lifted from his life on earth into timeless joy. Malcolm was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 10, 1942 to Roger Malcolm Briggs and Barbara Farnsworth Briggs. In 1947, the family relocated to Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, where Malcolm earned his first dollar as a six-year-old paid chorister at St. Asaph's Episcopal Church; it was there he said, he first learned to pray. In 1954, Malcolm's family moved to Vero Beach, Florida, where Malcolm attended junior high and high school. In 1964, after completing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Florida (Gainesville), Malcolm was hired by American Realty Service Corporation in Memphis, Tennessee, where he served as controller and company pilot. In 1969, Malcolm began his hospitality career in Richmond, Virginia, when he joined his father and brother at H. I. Management Services, Inc. (HIMS), a Richmond-based, family-owned hotel development and property management firm founded by Malcolm's father, Roger Briggs. Malcolm served the pioneering hospitality company, initially as vice president and later as president, for 21 years, overseeing property development and financing. In 1998, HIMS was renamed Briggs Hospitality Corporation, and Malcolm named its chief executive officer. For the next 10 plus years, he led the executive staff in strategic planning while overseeing all aspects of property financing, operations, employee relations, and marketing. During the first decade of the new millennium, through a changing and challenging business environment, Malcolm shepherded the sales of the remaining family-owned hotels and closed out Briggs Hospitality Corporation's headquarters in Richmond.

Confirmed by Jack Spong in 1975 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Malcolm subsequently held years-long memberships at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church and River Road Church, Baptist. Active in the greater Richmond Metro community, Malcolm served on numerous boards related to private, corporate, and public interests. He valued the personal and professional relationships developed with family, friends, employees, and business partners over the years of his career and retirement. As an individual and a member of the Richmond Regional Reentry Program Team, Malcolm mentored men and women aspiring to gain new footholds in society at large after being released from prison. He befriended international students living far from their homes in China while completing graduate degrees in nuclear, electrical and biomedical engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University. The ongoing relationships that grew out of these and other experiences with neighbors from near and far widened Malcolm's perspectives and enriched his life.

Malcolm's family who will ever hold him dear in their lives include his wife, Carolyn Belote Briggs of Henrico, Virginia; daughter, Christina Michelle Briggs of San Francisco, California; son, Roger Malcolm Briggs of Charlotte, North Carolina, and wife, Katharine Briggs; daughter, Kimberly Austin Briggs of Arlington, Virginia; Barbara Dickerson Briggs of Richmond, mother of Christina, Roger, and Kimberly Briggs; stepson, Seth Belote Roberts of Richmond and wife, Elizabeth Roberts; brother, Cordell Briggs of Richmond and wife, Virginia "Ginny" Briggs; sister, Lucinda "Cindy" Briggs of Richmond; six grandchildren, USMA Cadet Roger Malcolm Briggs III and Caroline Morgan Briggs of Charlotte, North Carolina, Eleanor Anne and Emelia Susan Roberts of Richmond, Tyler Wardell and Morgan Lucille Winslow of San Francisco; and Edward Wardell Winslow of San Francisco, father of Tyler and Morgan Winslow.

To his last breath, Malcolm, loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, lived his life with courage, generosity, and joy. A gathering to give thanks to God for Malcolm's life will be held in the sanctuary of River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Road, on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 4 p.m.

I worked for the Briggs family at 3200 West Broad in Richmond. The memory of Malcolm rolling in with his nice suit and usually some papers in his hand. We always thought of him as the "brains" of the organization. He was a nice man.

Carolyn, I was deeply saddened to hear about Malcom's passing. Malcolm was one of the kindest and generous men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was a gentleman and a scholar and my friend and mentor and I was so blessed for the time in my life that I spent with him and with you. Your love and adoration for him was amazing to watch. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family during this difficult time and going forward. Malcolm will be missed by many. I know he is in Heaven right now, without a doubt, and I know June was so very happy to see him.
Fly high, Malcolm; you left a lasting impression on my that I will never forget.

I´m so saddened by this news. I worked for him for many years at different properties. He was kind , understanding , intelligent and a man of his word. I Will be forever grateful for the time he gave me with my Dad when he was dying of cancer. He assured me my job would be there when I came back.. I know how much he loved his family and will be praying for them. Open the gates " Lord God " for another Angel is coming home !
