Marilyn Hunter Obituary

Marilyn Wood Hunter

September 28, 1944 - September 13, 2025

Marilyn June Wood Hunter went home to be with the Lord on September 13, 2025. She was born on September 28, 1944 in Charlottesville, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Claudius Jasper Wood, Jr. and Fannie Lee Moore Wood. She was the eldest of three children and was preceded in death by her brother, Frederick Lee Wood. She is survived by her brother, James Larry Wood, and his wife, Bobby Anne.

Marilyn graduated from the College of Mary Washington in 1966 with a degree in mathematics. She married the love of her life, Raymond "Tracy" Hunter, Jr. in 1965 and began the first chapter of her adult life as mother and caretaker of her family. She and Tracy raised three children, amidst a busy life of swim teams, baseball, Girl Scouts and Indian Guides. Their hearts, however, were never far from their childhood hometown of Waynesboro, Virginia. Every holiday was spent back in Waynesboro visiting with parents, siblings and numerous cousins. Over the years, however, her sharp mind for numbers and logic would lead her to begin the second chapter of her life, that of a busy working mother.

She began her career in the Student Accounts office of the University of Richmond. It wouldn't be long, however, before business and the emerging career of coding provided a new opportunity for Marilyn. She was hired by the Best Products Company, which sent her to Connecticut to learn how to write code in COBOL. She worked in IT for Best Products for several years, after which she followed a wonderful team of co-workers to Owens and Minor, where she expanded her coding skills to project management. She retired from Perot Systems as a respected member of their project development teams.

Marilyn was most proud, however, of her ever growing family circle. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raymond Tracy Hunter, their children Stephanie Hunter Estes (Howard), Brian Hunter (Amy), Stacie Hunter McClung (Scott), and grandchildren Skip Estes (Carly), Claudia Kush (Nick), Emma Petrey (Arthur), Christopher Hunter, Grace Lewis (Jacob), Lydia McClung, Elijah McClung and Anna Claire McClung. One of her greatest joys was being able to hold her great grandchildren, Clara and Nathaniel Petrey and Sage Lewis. She is lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held on Friday, October 24, 4:00 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member for almost 60 years, 4200 Dover Road, Richmond, VA 23221. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Grace Baptist Church Ann Webb Benevolence Fund at www.rvagrace.org/give.
