Marilyn Tipton Obituary

Marilyn Oglesby Tipton passed away August 26, 2003 in Richmond. The recent widow of Noah Ray Tipton, she was a resident of Pensacola, Fla. and Richmond, Va. Mrs. Tipton was born in Chester, Pa. to Samuel and Martha Oglesby. A graduate of Florida State University, she began her professional career as a home economics teacher in Pensacola. As the first executive director of the Pensacola-Escambia Clean Community Commission, she strove to beautify Pensacola. She continued her work as a consultant for Keep Florida Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. A community activist, Mrs. Tipton was a long term member of The Fan Woman’s Club in Richmond, where she served as chairman of the Neighborhood Improvement Committee and was responsible for many improvements to Meadow Park. In Pensacola, Mrs. Tipton sat on the St. Michael’s Cemetery Board and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Pensacola. A true patron of the arts, Mrs. Tipton served on the board and was president of the Pensacola Museum of Art which she continued to support until her death. Mrs. Tipton is survived by her sister, Elaine Mager and husband, Mark of Pensacola and their two children, Brian and Laura; and her cousin, Sue Greer and husband, Rollo of Sheridan, Ind. and their children. Mrs. Tipton’s memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at Pensacola at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2003. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Pensacola Museum of Art, 407 S. Jefferson St., Pensacola, Fla. 32501 or a charity of your choice.
