June 9, 1943 - October 31, 2024

Mary Ellen Greene, age 81, of Varina, VA, died on Thursday, October 31, 2024. Mary Ellen was born in Evansville, Indiana on June 9, 1943, to the late Preston Atlas and Lucy Ruffin Greene. She was preceded in death by brother Edmund Greene in 2016 and brother William (Bill) Greene in 2022. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Greene Adams; sister-in-law Elizabeth (Betty) Greene; nephews Preston Archer Greene and Will Greene; and nieces Grace Greene and Katie Adams Henke. Mary Ellen graduated from Charles City High School and the College of William and Mary. After a year of teaching elementary school, she took the civil service test and was recruited and trained by the Federal government to become a computer programmer. She worked in Philadelphia PA, St. Louis, MO, and Trenton, NJ before finally returning to Virginia in the early 1980's. She finished her career working at Fort Lee. After her retirement, Mary Ellen spent several years volunteering at the Charles City County History Center. She loved reading, word and logic puzzles, genealogy, and cats. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Westover Episcopal Church in Charles City, VA. The family will gather with friends after the service at Westover Parish House. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Charles City Virginia Animal Shelter.
