Mary Knight Obituary
October 19, 1933 - November 8, 2024
Mary Lois Knight passed away peacefully on November 8, 2024, in her residence in Oxford, Ohio. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Kathleen Kimball Snyder Gilliam and Dr. Robert Lindsay Gilliam II. Educated in public and private schools in Atlanta and Jackson, Tennessee, Mary Lois was an excellent student. At the University of Mississippi, she received a two-year secretarial certification. While at Ole Miss, she met James Riley Knight, Jr. (Jimmy), from Pontotoc, MS, and they were married in Union City, Tennessee on June 25, 1955. The family made their home in Warsaw, Virginia. Jimmy and Mary Lois established a dental practice in Warsaw that would serve the town for over thirty years, and became faithful and active members of Warsaw United Methodist Church. Mary Lois worked as a homemaker and also provided secretarial support at the dental practice. Her passion was gardening; she earned a Master Gardener certification later in life. She was a member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck, Friends of the Rappahannock Community College Library, a Hospice volunteer, and a docent at Stratford Hall. Mary Lois was a life-long learner, a voracious reader, an appreciator of desserts, and loved to travel. In 2021, she moved to Oxford, Ohio, and lived her last years there. Mary Lois is preceded in death by her husband James Riley Knight, Jr., (Jimmy), brother Robert L. Gilliam II (Bobby), and many dear friends. She is survived by her daughter Cary Elizabeth Greenland (Ron), Robert Edwin Knight, and Kathleen Knight Abowitz (Rob), and four beloved grandchildren. She is survived by many friends in Warsaw and Oxford. A funeral service will be held at Warsaw United Methodist Church on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Betty Jo Sims officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David Sisson Memorial Scholarship Fund at Rappahannock Community College, 52 Campus Drive Warsaw, VA 22572.
