Mary Mulé Obituary

Mary Hayes Mulé, RN, BSN, FNE

April 6, 2025

Mary Hayes Mulé, RN, BSN, FNE, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the age of 76 in Henrico, VA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Joseph Hayes, Sr. and Frances Patricia O'Neill; brother, Robert Joseph Hayes, Jr. She is survived by her children, Anna (Bryan), Salvatore (Heidi), and Michael (Merissa); grandchildren, Aleksa, Madyson, Reese, Ella, Camille, Emily, Riley, and Hannah (Ross); sister, Margaret and brother, Frank (Elaine); and several nieces and nephews and beloved family members. Born in Waynesboro, VA, she raised her children in Henrico and later retired in Midlothian.

Mary earned her BSN in 1971 from the Medical College of Virginia. She was best known for her 37 years of service as an ER nurse at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Forest Campus, where she was affectionately known as Mother Mary. Countless stories of her compassion as one of the first forensic (SANE) nurses in Richmond and her tenacity with the unruliest of patients have been shared through the years. In 1999, Mary received the YWCA Outstanding Women Award for Health and Science. In 2009, she received a Certificate of Commendation from the Henrico Police Division for her volunteer service as a nurse with 37 different police academies over 24 years. Mary also spent over 30 years volunteering at the First Aid station at the State Fair of Virginia.

To her family, she was lovingly known as Maime - leader of the Super Spies, avid reader, baker of delicious desserts, Elvis fan, and birdwatcher. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye, and she will be remembered for her love and devotion to family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at the same location with a dessert reception immediately following. Please, no flowers; the family requests donations to your local SPCA in her memory.

Miss Wood and Endzone.

June 13, 2025

Miss Mary was a delight in my life. I loved her sense of humor with my Halloween antics with her Newspaper. I knew Miss Mary loved her newspaper, and I was thrilled to be her carrier. Miss Mary loved to hear about the Feline Mafia and my Dog Endzone, she was kind and very generous. I will name the next Mafia cat after her and may she rest in peace. I will truly miss her. I would receive the best cards from her in the mail, and I loved how she was in tune with Nature and so was I. I will miss those cards. My heart goes out to her family.
