Matthew Hugh Lloyd III passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at age 74. He was born on August 6, 1951, to M. Hugh Lloyd, Jr. and Elizabeth "Betty" Grubbs Lloyd. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; uncles, John E. Lloyd and William A. Lloyd, Sr. and his wife, Anne D. Lloyd; aunts, Ann F. Joyce and Mary W. Lloyd; and first cousins, Rebecca W. Lloyd, Jacquelyn Grubbs Deales, and John C. Lloyd. He is survived by his sisters, Janice Lloyd Banks and her husband, Charley, and Nancy C. Lloyd; his nephew, Douglas M. Banks (Linda Evans); his niece, Amanda Banks Langston (Daniel); great-nephews, Lucas, Isaac, and Caleb Langston; uncle and aunt, John W. Grubbs Sr. and Jean Flowers Grubbs; first cousins, John W. Grubbs Jr. (Margaret), Jo Lynn Grubbs Breckenridge, Mary Anne Lloyd Lowery (Rhett), Bill Lloyd (Carol), Tim Lloyd (Teresa), Barbara T. Lloyd, and Susan Lloyd Caddell (Bobby).
Hugh graduated from Hermitage High School in the Class of 1970 and from Madison College (now James Madison University) with a B.S. in Business in 1974. He was baptized at Greenwood United Methodist Church as a young child and later became a member. Later in life, he transferred his membership to Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 21st, at Greenwood United Methodist Church. Donations in memory of Hugh may be sent to Greenwood UMC, 10040 Greenwood Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060, or to Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen 23059, or to a charity of your choice. Burial will be private.

Hugh and I went through school together. I knew him as "Hughey." He and I were classmates and friends. For a while, we rode the same school bus together. I remember him as being understanding, kind, and willing to help others. I recall that one day in class Hugh observed that we both had the same suffix of "III" in our names, and this made him happy. The last time I saw Hugh was on our graduation from Hermitage High School in 1970. We attended different colleges and worked in different fields, but we probably traveled the same roads and most likely we unknowingly passed each other during our travels. I am saddened at Hugh's passing. My condolences to Hugh's family.

I haven't seen Hugh for years but When I saw this it brought back memories from times past. I always concidered Hugh a really good guy. I knew him , his father and his grand father. I liked them all. Fine people. I was proud to call them all my friend.
