Dr. Melvin C. Burton Jr.

BURTON, Dr. Melvin C., Jr., 83, of Midlothian, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 24, 2021. He was the son of the late Melvin Sr. "Buck" and Connie Burton; and is survived by his daughter, Teri Kuttenkuler (Joe); sons, Scott Burton and Chris Burton (Kelly); grandchildren, Evan Ball (Kacey), Ben Kuttenkuler, Jack Burton, Brandon Kuttenkuler (Daria); great-grandchildren, Jayden and Jaxson Ball; brother, Raymond L. Burton (Margy); one niece, two nephews and a large circle of extended family and friends. Mel held a Ph.D. of Finance from American University, was a professor in the School of Business at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College for more than 40 years and also an adjunct Professor at John Tyler Community College. He was an active member of Phi Beta Lambda and many of his students received state and national recognition under his mentorship. He was an accomplished piano teacher and organist, serving as director of music at several local churches over the years. He also proudly led the Whitechapel Handbell Carillion. Since 1984 the bell choir performed at Maymont Park, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, The Jefferson Hotel, The Virginia Governor's Mansion and the White House. Dr. Burton actualized his life's dreams by giving back to his students, who brought him tremendous joy. Due to the current pandemic, the family will have a private graveside service.
