Michael John Wassmer

1970 - 2022

WASSMER, Michael John, was an outstanding father, husband, son, brother and friend. He left this world peacefully, in his sleep, on June 16, 2022, at the age of 52. Mike was born to Larry and Betty Wassmer in Pequannock, N.J. At Vernon High School, he was an outstanding student and a multi-sport athlete excelling in football, track, and wrestling. Mike received a B.S. in Mathematics at Lafayette College, where he walked on to the football team, and an M.S. in Mathematics from Duke University.

He joined Capital One in 1994 as a Business Analyst and held a series of positions that culminated with his role as President of Card. In a career with many highlights, Mike especially enjoyed living in London while working to build the UK Card business. He was particularly proud of his role as Richmond Market President, where he worked to improve the quality of life in the Richmond community.

As part of his commitment to Richmond, Mike served on the boards of several local nonprofit organizations, including the Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children, The Faison Center and the Full Circle Grief Center. Mike's family looks forward to continuing his legacy of supporting the Richmond community.

Mike was also passionate about fitness and sports. He never missed an early morning workout, constantly challenged himself, and throughly enjoyed competing in CrossFit and Ironman competitions. In April, Mike was thrilled to have reached his long-time goal of running The Boston Marathon.

Without question, Mike's greatest joy was his family. He saved the best of himself for his wife of 21 years, Andrea, and their children Zach, Owen, and Allie. He was an enthusiastic supporter of their ever-evolving interests, an attentive listener and thoughtful with his guidance. He was a podcast-, article-, and playlist-sharer and a giver of thoughtful and creative gifts who was always working on a surprise. He was a reassuring voice at the dinner table, saw opportunities in adversity and made everyone believe that things would work out. They are profoundly grateful for him and incredibly proud of him.

Mike was predeceased by his father, Larry; and his older brother, Larry Junior. He is survived by a heartbroken extended family including his mother, Betty Wassmer; siblings, Patty Henderson (Wade), Dave Wassmer (Joy) and Cindie Salazar (Ray); sister-in-law, Claudia Rinaldi (Lane); and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His entire family will miss him terribly.
