Nancy Guthrie Obituary

Nancy Harris Guthrie, 78 of Richmond Virginia, passed away on November 15th, 2024. The daughter of the late Shirley Hurst Harris and Clyde Earl Harris, she was preceded in death by her brother, Rodney Harris. She is survived by her son, Adam Guthrie (Sopha); grandchildren Austin, Logan, and Kinsley Guthrie.
After Graduating from George Wythe High School, Nancy spent over 30 years at the Richmond News Leader/Richmond Times Dispatch. "Arlo" as she was known around the newsroom, she always did her job with pep in her step and a smile on her face. Dubbed by some of her colleagues as the "real Chrismas Mother" for her hard work supporting the fund around the holidays, she put her personal touch on everything she came across whether it was handling the Christmas Mother responsibilities, tv grids, editorial assistant, etc.
Nancy had many interests in her life including but not limited to nature, baking, reading, and was a multi-faceted artist. She loved going to the beach finding shells and shark teeth. She also loved studying birds and watching them. Artistically she could do it all. Making Ukrainian eggs, quilting and knitting, making ornaments, painting, etc. Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas were always a real treat because you could be guaranteed she would make her famous 1-2-3-4 cake, lemon squares, or some other delicious dessert. For downtime, she would routinely curl up with a good book and often read for hours.
When she wasn't doing any of the above, she was busy spoiling her son and grandchildren. Nancy will be greatly missed but the family is comforted knowing she is no longer suffering and has been called home.
Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7th at Derbyshire Baptist Church, 8800 Derbyshire Road, Richmond, VA US 23229.

To the family and loved ones,
I send heartfelt condolences on the loss of Ms. Nancy. May your memories comfort you when you need them the most. My encounters with Ms. Nancy was by way of her caregiver, Terri. Ms. Nancy was funny and in reading her obituary I can tell she enjoyed life and lived on her own terms. I know she will be missed by many; those who loved and cared for her.

Here goes on of my final contacts with the old Westover hills area. I was friends in teen years with her brother Rodney. That brought me into contact with Nancy at a very young age. Then there were the meetings as she lost her brother and her Mom. Hate to see her leave but I will follow soon.
