Nancy Newton Obituary

NEWTON, Mrs. Nancy Arrington Pace, Dear Family and Friends,

after a 2 1/2 year journey with pancreatic cancer, I peacefully passed away, in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 3, 2021. I had a smile on my face remembering all the blessings of my life. Some of those blessings who pre-deceased me are my mother and daddy, Loraine McDill and Horace Fred Pace; and my brother, Horace Fred Pace Jr. The greatest joys and blessings of my life who survive me are my son, James Keith Marshall Newton IV; my daughter-in-law, Patricia Crosby Newton; and my three precious grandchildren, Susan Stiel, Margaret Tyler and Marshall Arrington Newton. I have always been grateful for my wonderful extended family and dear friends who survive me. I would also like to give a special thanks to Ms. Wilma, Ms. Teresa and Ms. Robin, who courageously and lovingly helped me navigate the challenges of my final days.

After living 72 years in Richmond, Virginia, I moved to New Orleans in 2014 to be a Granny. I've always been proud of both graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School and RPI (Virginia Commonwealth University), as well as the graduate work I completed at the University of Virginia.

My varied multiple careers took many unusual twists and turns: great fun in the early '60s as a Miller and Rhoads Tea Room model and then their Youth Coordinator. As a math teacher at The Collegiate School for 44 years, I loved and adored each one of my students even though there were many who wanted to strangle me. I did push them to do their best. Being a professional photographer was extremely rewarding, as I photographed brides, grooms and families, on such an important day in their life. It was very exciting to be the Kennedy Center photographer for the 25th anniversary gala, and the only photographer allowed in the Presidential box. I had wonderful memories throughout my life. Going to Japan as Richmond's community ambassador with the Experiment in International Living was life changing for me.

My favorite volunteer efforts in Richmond were the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and my church, St. James's Episcopal Church. In New Orleans, I enjoyed volunteering at the World War II museum and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6249 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, La. 70124, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 (enter Canal Blvd. entrance without a green awning; service will be streamed live, youtube.com/user/StPaulsNOLA/live). A service will eventually be held at Saint James's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va., hopefully in the summer of 2021.

My ashes will rest in the columbarium in the chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Orleans and Riverview Cemetery with my parents. If you wish, give to the charity of your choice, may I suggest Covenant House, a home for homeless and abused children in New Orleans - Covenant House, 611 North Rampart Street, New Orleans, La. 70112.

Frequently, tell your loved ones you love them!

Wishing you God's peace and blessings!

Much love, Nancy

Dear Mrs. Newton,
While I never had the pleasure of taking your class at TCS, I remember your name mentioned fondly by many and also remember vividly seeing your bright shining countenance around the halls. You were a valuable and influential member of the Collegiate community and will be missed by many.

Dear Mrs. Newton: I struggled so with your classes that you gave me homework to do every day of the summer. You celebrated when I finally made a sold C — and it was a long time coming! For some reason, you thought — and told me! — I was one of your brightest students. I carry with me your encouragement and confidence in me to this day. You were one of my very favorite teachers, and I've thought of you often. Even though we haven't seen each either for years and years, my world seems a little bit emptier now with your passing.

Ms. Newton!
I will never forget you and your timed "5 Problems" Quiz that we did each morning in math. I hated every minute of it! But in those struggles, you believed in me, you taught me how to believe in myself and my abilities. The extra time you took with me, the little tricks you taught me, I have carried through graduate school and into a lifetime in Nursing. Thanks for pushing me to be my best and for not giving into my childish excuses.
I remember when your beloved son was born. You showed up throughout your pregnancy with a smile on your face (most of the time). It was the first time I had ever been around a pregnant lady and you seemed to glow with strength. I often thought about that during the last days of my own 3 pregnancies-if Nancy Newton could show up until the babe was born, by God, so could I!
I also remember when you brought that baby boy to school for the first time. I could tell that he had cast a spell on you and that you were thoroughly in love. I have several of your professional photos, taken at my brother's wedding. I was so surprised to see you pop up from behind that camera and greet me with such warmth. You knew exactly what I had been up to after teaching me at Collegiate.
I admire your full life as: Beauty Queen, Math whiz, Teacher, accomplished artist/photographer plus mother and grandmother-a Renaissance Woman. Surely you are with the Saints!

As a member of the Collegiate School class of 1985, I remember Mrs. Newton with great fondness. She was an amazing teacher who inspired and motivated us every day to do our best work. That was not always an easy task! She treated all of her students with respect and was patient and kind. Hope her family can find comfort in the memories they share. Sending prayers.

What a gal! Always smiling, always caring, Nancy was my 6th grade math teacher. Her influence didn't stop there, she continued to be interested in you and showed favor with her 100-watt smile. I'll miss her and am honored to have grown and flourished under her tutelage.

I can still see Miss Pace turning the corner onto the Middle School wing - you could see from 100 paces that it was pop quiz day. A zillion multiplication of fraction problems, quiz taken and graded within the period. Oh, we thought she was so tough on us, but boy, can I do some math! My condolences to the family.
